Hi everyone,

PC Noise drives me insane. So I got a whisper PSU and a Zalman 6000CU flower HSF for my XP 1700+. I have no other fans installed at this time, to try to limit the noise. I have the Fan Mate thingy set to sping the Zalman 6000CU fan at only 1200rpm, so my cpu idles at 51c and when I put it on HEAVY load it gets as high as 55.5c (after running MAX load for 2 hours straight). As it is, the fan spinning at 1500rpm is still too noisy for my taste, if I had my way I would have it even quieter (absolute silence), but I realize that this is probably not possible. Just wondering if these temperatures I'm stating are TOO high? I was trying to find out info on AMD's website of what the 'recommended' running idle|high load temps should be, but instead I just see tech docs on what it CAN handle (91c).

Let me know the facts, and if you have opinions I'll welcome those also.

I'm also *thinking* of installing the two case flans to create the airflow to lower the temp a little bit... but I'd REALLY hate to increase the noise level at all. If you have a better idea, please let me know. I'm trying to go for straight out INAUDIBLE at this point.

I would really reccommend getting two exhaust fans. The AthlonXP puts out an enormous amount of heat, and all the components in your case will eventually suffer because of it. For quiet, I'd reccommend either the PowerPC and Cooling Silencer fans ( They're 80mm, and are only 20dB.) Or the Panaflo L1As. You will hardly notice them...they're quieter than the quietest hard drives made. I have 2 silencers and they are very quiet fans. I still have a somewhat loud case (loud stock HSF, and two other 80mm fans that are moderately noisy), but the Silencers really cut back on the noise.

I have the same CPU and HSF

I have 2 Papst case fans (at 19 CFM each).. I get temps of 46 idle (if i'm very lucky) and 58 load...

Panaflos are known to be very quiet and very efficient for their noise level, i'd get at LEAST one 80mm, you'll be suprised what it'll do for temps....and basicly as mentioned before, you're other components(and your CPU) are going to suffer because of the excess heat....good luck!

What lithium said

Oh and if you only go for one case fan, then have it as the front intake.

I strongly disagree with migroo on the location of a single case fan. If you have one, i would put it on the top rear, right near the CPU. It'll draw the air from the hottest part of the case out, replacing it with cool outside air from everywhere in the case. If you just blow in, there's a very good possibility that the cool air will simply flow in the bottom, and out near the bottom, forming a hot pocket of air near the top...right where the CPU sits. With a single fan, it almost has to be exhaust to work well.

Its personal preference, but did you forget that the powersupply is already drawing hot air out?

I prefer to have cold air coming in at a cirtain point in the case and have it ducted to the CPU (so that the CPu gets cold air) rather than have an exhaust fan as although the exhaust fan will mean there is relatively little hot air left around the CPU, there wont be any cold air getting to it, just warm air from random points in the case.
