i put an xp 1700+ in my gf's computer a few months ago, but recently i've noticed that every program (and the bios) display the cpu as only having 64kb of L2 cache

do you think there is damage to the core ??
maybe a sign that the cpu is going out ?

What did the bios and Cpu-Z say to start with? Did you check it to start with? It's either a damaged chip, or you need to upgrade the bios. That can happen when you put a chip that's newer into a board that wasn't designed for that chip yet, when it was built.

haha yeah
looks like i'll have to get a new cpu

hours added to seti packets over night

i got the latest bios and i do remember it displaying everything right before
all the benchmarks were higher and everything

ohh well i'll just throw it in the pile with the rest...

i think it might have happened because the heatsink was loose
the system locked up a few times just before it happened too

it can't be because i put some cheep white thermal paste on it like last week when i ran out of AS2 ...

this is odd

maybe it was all the overclocking i did on the cpu when i had it in my nf7-s

i might get one of those, a new motherboard, and some new mem

i just need to rob a bank or something first

thanks for the advice everyone

edit: Link to an AT newbie getting 2.57 out of his.

I'm a newb?? I joined 5 mounths before you did :D j/k
Now on topic, does the bios think its a athlon XP or report it as a Duron? if its the latter maybe your L5 (I think thats the one for Cache) is broken,

If you chip reports as a XP you got me I don't got any ideas. if its a retail call AMD i'm sure they would RMA it

yeah most programs report it as "unknown cpu type" nomatter what settings i use in the bios
but memtest86 and the bios report it as a .18u duron

yeah maybe i should take the heatsink off and see if something happened to my bridges, cause i once had them modded last year

good catch thanks

ok i took the heatsink off and it apears the core has two corners chipped off
Closeup
cpu and heatsink

i shoulda known better
the slk-800 heatsink doesn't have a wide enough base to touch anything but the core
this put too much pressure on it and cracked two corners thus disabling 75% of the L2 cache (the heatsink would move and grind on the corners of the core)

if i had only moved the little pads like i did with some other cpu's i've used with this heatsink

Three of four corners on my barton are chipped worse than that and it still runs like new, have you tried it in another board?

no, i don't have any other "working" boards right now
the other 2 are broken

but i'm pretty sure that is the cause, because those chips weren't there last time i installed it

also i've chipped other cores worse too without it affecting anything
guess i just got unlucky on this one

Ouch. That's one of the reasons I bought the ThermalTake silent Boost over the SLK-800. It's just as big and it has a full base, so all four pads on my AMD Barton 2500+ contact the base.

ok bad news the 2000+ appears to be locked
so i can't do anything

and with the msi kt133a board i can't even get a stable fsb oc above about 135 or 136

i'm gonna start a new thread to see if anyone can help me mod it to a 2600+ which is the highest the board supports

They have Alumina thermal compound too, and it's pretty good stuff.
