XP 1700+ and locking the clock

I read today that from the Athlon XP 1900+ and above AMD locked the clock of these beasts.
As I am planning to buy a XP 1700+ to put in an old 200Mhz FSB mobo, that I need to adjust the multiplier, I would like to know if the 1700+ that are still being munufatured are clock locked or are the same as the old ones, ie, free for fun 🙂

If it is a Thorton 1700+ it is going to be locked. Same with Palamino (I beleive all those were locked, but you don't want that anyway's) Other than that, with T-breds, I think it's hit or miss.

As you said the board was old, do you mean 200Mhz effective or 200Mhz actual? If it's the former, make sure the board will accept an athlonXP, as many won't without at least a BIOS upgrade. Also, make sure the board can supply the correct voltage for a tbred B.

The mobo is a Asus A7Pro that I recently updated de BIOS to the latest version. In ASUS site they say It does not support the Athlon XP (due to its 266 FSB only?) neither the 1.4-1.8 Durons. The A7Pro manual and the BIOS setup shows a 133Mhz x2 FSB setting, ie, 266 FSB. Am I ready for the XP? Sandra says I can go to a 1.8 Ghz processor or more...

Well your BIOS does not officially support them so at the very least it will not display the correct model number on boot up if it works at all. However, on looking at your boards manual, I noticed that it has voltages from 1.075 to 1.85, which is definately within the range of current Athlons. Personally I would maybe give it a try and if it doesn't like it, get a new mobo as it's getting to the end of its upgrabability anyway. The K7s5A Pro would be a nice solution as it is cheap, could use your (PC133?) SD-RAM, but offers the ability to use DDR when and if you want to upgrade it later as well as have moderate overcloking options. Newegg has them for ~$42 right now.

That´s what I´m gonna do. Try the XP with my current mobo and if it does not work try another one.
I´ll just wait a little more till I learn more about how to recognize a good Athlon XP for OC without having to connect those bridges...

Thanks everybody!
