Ok, i just got a athalon xp 1600, and a K7S5A.

I changed the FSB for the ram and the 1600 to 133mhz, and everything was going good, but then windows just starts locking up.
to get it to run without locking up i have to put the CPU down to 100mhz.

anyone know how i could fix this?

I had similiar problem back in the K6-2 days, my 450 woudlnt do 100MHZ bus (something like that) , I had to set it to 66, it too was on a crappy ass PC CHips/ECS board. I solved my probs by replacing the board with an Asus 🙂 . Im never gonna buy from them again =(

Same thing happened to me for a while. It's prolly the RAM. Got Crucial, and it did it, put in my bargain bin memory and it works fine. So much for quality..::Shrugs:: I'd still say get a stick of Crucial though, at least you can return it.

Umm, with Via chipsets, the Processor bus and memory bus speeds can be set independently- Not really sure if you can with SiS, but set the memory only back to 100mhz, see what happens. If it's not a memory problem, then it's probably the board, or maybe an overheat problem.

ECS seems to have some QC issues- many boards work just fine, others have different kinds of flakey problems....

Jhhnn, that would be really handy IF the mobo I was getting errors with was mine, but it wasn't. It was my brother's VIA chipset KT133 board. Iwill I think was the manufactorer. Anyway his mobo couldn't be set independantly, and it wouldn't have been a fix anyway, just a work-around until he could get some better RAM. My motherboard had no trouble at all with my old PC133, or my new Crucial PC2100.

i have the ram set to 133 right now and here are the only combinations i can do

cpu=100
ram=100

cpu=100
ram=133 ------- what i have it on now

cpu=133
ram=133 ------- where its supposed to be, but.....

any more advice?

<< Quick question. What are you CAS settings and such? You might want to turn them down. >>

well, my cas settings are at SPD, and i don't remember what my other settings are at, let me re-start

You could try upping the cpu voltage a bit. It's possible that your power supply can't quite put out enough juice to run your cpu at full speed. Often bumping the cpu voltage will compensate for that.

Just UNDO what you did. Set everything back to default.

Might be worth you trying turning off SPD and doing the memory config manually.
Ive noticed a lot of boards cannot properly SPD config Crucial's dimms.
My current GA7VTXH tries to run my PC2100 ECC dimm at Cas 2 when i use SPD. The dimm is rated as Cas 2.5 so i set it manually.
Same thing happens on my K7S5A.

ok, i have noticed something new.
even at cpu=100/ram=133 it still seems to lock up, just not as much as 133/133 did, and it seems to lock mostly while i am playing games

undo what?

How do i config the memory manually?

thanks for all your help, although i havn't been able to flash the bios yet, it keeps saying that there is a missing file when trying to load the flash utility, then my DOS text turns bloor red.
