XP-120 Heatsink [original model]

Hey guys, just a question to any others who own this heatsink. I have had it for atleast two years now, and for the most part it does its job well. However i bought a fan controller last night and hooked up the 120mm fan I have on the HS to it [it was pretty damn loud].

This is whats bugging me -
Running Orthos to make the cpu as hot as possible with the fan going @ 100% = 69-70c
Dialing the fan down to almost 6volt = 72c max.

Wierd huh? Im wondering if any others see such a minor difference with fan speed on thier Xp120s...or if maybe mine is slightly defective [bad heatpipes?]. The heatsink itself is barely warm even when running Orthos on it all day. Ive had this issue since I first bought it and used it on a Athlon 64...And I have reseated it a few times and put As3 on it to.

My GPU HS on the other hand will burn my skin if i touch it, literally. And my NB/SB hs's are noticably warm aswell.

Fan is a Quad Blue LED 120mm Fan

Fan

At max rpm its 2400 [sounds like a Jet engine], on 6v its likely pushing 12-1300 rpm.

Wow it's kinda sad that you get a better overclock than I.

Anyway, I have a dual opteron 90nm 1.8@ 2.5ghz @ 1.55v. I only get 45c at full load, prime95. I've also got an xp-120 with a panaflo L1A @ 1700rpm. Runs fairly quiet.

Are you sure your thermal grease is applied properly? Have you checked for proper contact?

Yea ive lapped it a few times before, it definately has contact. I can even see the area where the cpu rests at in the thermal grease...I think I just got one of those 120's that wasnt soldered right on the heatpipes, it seems like it was a pretty rare thing but theres a good number of reports on google about it. It explains why the thing never gets warm at all.

It sucks,im sure I could hit higher if it worked correctly...still not a bad investment though, its the only heatsink ive had that lasted so long and has worked great, even if defective. Going on 2-3 years with it, definately buying another Thermaltake HS whenever I upgrade again.

clean your CPU again because I have an XP-120 that works flawlessly volted down. you might wanna try a 38mm thick fan. They're far more effective with heatsinks. 25mm fans are good open air, but 38mm fans shine when there's resistance.

xp-120 at 70c, fan not having an effect, heatsink not warm to touch... this all leads me to believe that the heatsink isn't mounted properly or its defective. thats very hot for that type of cpu especially for an xp-120(!). it should be half that temp.

but that is a very nice overclock for an old 130nm socket 754. i had a 2800+ that only could get 2.2ghz. now I have a 90nm venice 3200+ that gets 2.5ghz and only goes up to 50c on stock heatsink. also have a 6800 gt which oc's to 415/1150, what about yours? too bad its hard to find a venice 754 anymore, it would go well with your system. wish i had your mobo. i wouldn't think you could get much higher even with a better heatsink because thats excellent for that cpu. Text kind of high tho
