Xoom and Atrix are both sales flop, who isn't surprised?

He says the Atrix in particular has been hurt by competition from the $49 price points for the Apple 3GS and the HTC Inspire, keeping sales “well below forecast.”

LOL. They can't beat the iPhone 3GS?!?

WhoTF is still buying "new" 3GS's?

I know, but people are allegedly picking a 3GS over a new phone. LOL.

MotionMan

Well people want a good cheap if possible free phone, the atrix is a premium and it doesn't deliver with its stupid skin. The inspire 4g actually feels faster than the atrix, people don't care about the cpu, ram or whatever when it comes to a phone.

Makes me think about how Windows XP is still so popular. LOL.

well there are people who still believes XP gives more FPS in games :)

well it depends. if your system is slow enough where enough RAM is being allocated to Win 7/Vista, then yes you might be getting better FPS in XP.

Like I already said, Motorola relied on Verizon for exclusivity and what not. When there's not much choice it's obvious Motorola will do well. The Droid 1 did great, but there's plenty of other great phones out there now.

The biggest issue I see with Motorola is their marketing. Tech geeks like to complain about skins and bootloaders, but the average person couldn't care less. The Droid line sold so well because Verizon marketed it. Without Verizon's Droid campaign, they've been mediocore.

HAHA they blamed the iPhone 3GS. Thats pretty sad.

I hate motorola as a company. Will never forgive them for the piece of shit called the RAZR.

RAZR was one of the best selling cellphones ever and they made the first decent Android phone that made Android popular. Sure I wouldn't buy a Motorola phone but they've made good phones before and still do.

But the RAZR was what saturated the American market because it was the only phone out there. I remember TONS of featurephones being far better than the RAZR. I just thought it was a joke that everyone had one.

The Xoom is not surprising, it costs to much. Not overpriced, it just costs to much. The should have made a 16GB $499 version. At $100 more than the iPad it just isn't going to work. Most people don't need 32GB's of storage on what is a second or third computer.

I'm kind of surprised the Atrix isn't doing well. It looks like a damn solid phone.

RAZR was cool because of the size. Thats the main reason I bought it. I want a compact phone in my pocket. One of the reasons that the iPhone is the phone for me as well. I could use a slightly larger screen, 4" would be nice, but i dont want something gigantic like the droid x.

All the ads I see highlight the lapdock, which no one wants to buy.
It's $100 too expensive and, more importantly, *requires a tether plan*. (Or a hack, but the root folks are staying away from the locked device.)

What a brilliant idea blown. Also, pentile qHD LCD isn't that impressive.

The Razr had good advertising. It had a unique form factor (its thinness) and they did a great job of marketing that to people. They haven't done a good job of showing people why they should want an Atrix. Oo..when the guy goes through security at the airport, it thinks its a computer? Wow. I want that phone.

The Atrix is a very good product that's just very poorly marketed, in my opinion at least.

They priced their signature feature, the laptop dock, too high. If it was $200 or so, people could get it with the phone for under $300 on contract, essentially getting usability of two devices for the price of one, it would be a much more compelling package. As it is priced now, the laptop dock is a non-factor in decision making of most buyers.

Moto screwed up, with the Xoom, the SD should have been enabled before it was put on the market, they should have stuck with a 16GB device, priced it at $499 (WiFi) $599 (3G/4G) and it would have sold a lot better.

They could have played off the "It's got expandable memory and it's the same price as the iPad."

I would have bought one.

The Atrix is sort of a mess, why in the heck would anyone buy a phone/expansion system that costs as much or more than a phone and an inexpensive notebook?

Does anyone at Moto think before they set prices?

I think Moto has the engineering/software nearly down, but they really don't have a handle on what is a fair market price for their stuff.

We'll see a bit of consolidation in the manufacturers as a result of the iPad, and Android phones are getting cheaper...

The only thing that I'm not surprised about is the constant trolling.
We need to chill out with the flaming and speculation and arguments for a couple months. Wait until something happens thats actually worth talking about.

Ya, it was cool, and it was also the hottest selling phone ever.....

...that is until the iPhone :)

That still doesn't excuse the fact that Android 3.0 was incredibly buggy and essentially beta-quality code out of the gate. And it doesn't excuse the fact that there is still a severe lack of killer apps for the platform.

The announcement of the iPad 2 essentially made the Xoom dead on arrival. Even if you ignore the fact that the iPad 2 was priced competitively and offered a more stable, 2nd generation platform, the market hype around Apple buried anything that Motorola had to offer. The only Android-based tablet ads I see on TV are for the Galaxy tablets.

I think with a better pricing and marketing strategy, Xoom could have had a much better start. There's still a lot of potential left in the product, though; we'll just have to see if Motorola can turn it around.
