While this may be an extension of the UT/ Q3 thread, I feel that this game very well deserves its own thread.

Played a couple of quick rounds of 2v2 CTF just now, which basically asserts my thread topic. Tight air control allows for precise cornering, and weapon feel oozes that of UT2004.

At its default graphics settings (most options on), the game not only looks great, but runs very well on my girlfriend's Intel E4300/ nVidia GT240 setup (100 FPS range @ 1920 x 1200).

Definitely worth a shot, and pickup games can be arranged on IRC (Quakenet, #xonotic, #xonotic.pickup). :)

Piqued my interest, I'll give it a shot.

Also, there will be little interest because no one likes skill-based games anymore.

I tried getting some friends to play TF2 and they didn't like it because there was no riflemen class : ( Not that TF2 is skill based.

Evidently.

It's a shame since obtaining medals/ perks has replaced actually improving one's skill. Gone are the days of self-satisfaction in this regard.

Different games require different skills. It's just that arena shooters are not much of a simulation of real war (which people look for these days) nor have the sheer brutality of such action, hence why CoD has always been popular and took off into the stars when CoD4 dropped. Arena shooters will always I think have a large enough fanbase to support the mainstays of the subgenre. Sure, Xonotic looks cool, but I doubt it will gain the following staples such as Quake and UT have. I'll give it a try though sometime later. Arena FPSs are a nice break, though I've been into older FPSs lately.

Doesn't Xonotic eliminate a lot of the skill though by automating many of those skilled functions (ie bunny hopping)?

They've intentionally "automated" bunny hopping to aid with the learning curve.

Last I tested, proper circle jumping and strafing netted better pickup speeds still, but I'll revisit this tonight when I get home from work.

Aside from the movement, weapon switch speeds are fast enough to allow for some nasty combos.

Got it downloaded and tried for a few minutes this morning.

I think i've played this before, a long time ago?

Anyway, definitely a nice throwback style of insane pace gaming (my fave kind). Very much a Q3 feel (which is a good thing for the most part).

Was caught up with things last night, so couldn't test the strafing yet.

n7: Indeed, you might have. Xonotic is a fork from Nexiuz, which is based off of the same engine (Darkplaces), I believe. They've revamped everything though, for the better apparently.

So... I checked the game out, at around 9 pm CST there was a total of 7 people playing the game according to my server list.

Tried it out. Controls are nice and tight and movement is the same. Needs some tweaking and more polishing but could be a great game. Reminds me of Q3 and now I want to load that back up...

Hell, that's better than when I've been checking, typically around 9PM EST. Max I've seen was around 3 or so? :p

I've read somewhere that the Nex players are waiting for version 1.0 before they jump ship. Unsure of what that scene is like, though...

Hmm, can't remember if I've tried this already, but will give it another go just in case. Ultimately it needs to get me off my Quake Live addiction.

Just had a go with the movement testing, and confirmed that circle jumps definitely lead to better "launching" from a standstill.

There's also a slight difference in cornering ability if one uses jump + forward, as opposed to jump + strafe. The strafe method allows for tighter cornering, while forward seems to maintain momentum - and perhaps increase speed as well.

Despite the noobification of the bunny-hopping, it seems like there's still quite some depth to the movement system. :)

Just gave it a whirl, and quite enjoyed it actually. The way BH is implemented is certainly not the object of mastery it historically has been but that's potentially a good thing when it comes to accessibility. I'm personally just glad to have it in a game.

You guys are making it sound like a jumping game, which makes me not want to play it. There was enough floaty-dodgeyness in UT 2004. Why can't they just replicate the UT99 movement and be happy with it?

While movement is a key factor, it definitely doesn't have the floaty feel of UT2004's double-dodge.

As much as I loved UT99 overall, I simply couldn't stand its movement, coming from games like Q2, SiN, and the eventual Q3 release. To each his/ her own, I guess. :)
