Can you believe I still use it. Haven't tested the new version but supposed to be some NZB support to.

Look at the upper left hand corner of the page for "Latest TEST version is 2006.03.14 " located at

I still use Xnews as well. One problem I have that I have not seen mentioned is that if I go to a group...Binary...and there are a lot of headers, like 1,000,000 plus, it downloads them and hangs. Any idea why there seems to be a limit? I have 1GB of ram!

No...you try it and tell me what you think! 😀

Actually, I have been thinking of trying Newsleecher and/or Newsbin pro. I want to be able to get many headers from groups I do not go to very often and XNews hangs when catching up on these groups.

Xnews does not use a swap file. If you have less than a gig of ram, you need to make your max headers at less than 1 mil. 800k works good.

Me too, I need to try one of those.

Have not tried but I think I read on their board a couple weeks ago that the NZB only works for posting not retrieving or something like that. Hopefully down the road.

Yes, I have noticed that. I may try 750,000 and see what happens.

Me too. I am trying Newsleecher now. I put it on a system with 256MB RAM and I picked a Binary group with 2.8 Million headers. I will see how well it works!

do you know how to use Xnews newsreader ?

Im using version 5.04.25 , considering its quite old, It is the only one I could find that is a free full version newsreader that even has Yenc jpg decryption in it.

However I can not seem to find "find newsgroup manually" , Im already connected to a server, but now I want to check if I can get into a specific newsgroup that they may have. I found this feature once but now I can not find it again , any help would be appreciated .

This is a very old thread. Maybe you'd be better off learning to use a newer newsreader, because Xnews was out of date when this topic was created.

I'd recommend starting a new topic asking what people are using. Grabit is also free.
