XMP Profile for new memory does not work

Hi everyone,

Hope you're having a wonderful holiday season and won't mind indulging me for a minute.

I received this as a Christmas gift from a friend:

https://www.amazon.com/Ballistix-Tactical-240-Pin-PC3-14900-BLT2KIT8G3D1869DT1TX0/dp/B00DVISMCG

I am using a Gigabyte p67a-ud7 motherboard. The point of the gift was to upgrade my pc from 8gb of RAM to 16gb. With the 8gb of RAM I simply had to tick the XMP option in my motherboard and the 1866MHz speed/timings would click in.

I put this ram in and the PC would not POST. It tried again then I got a warning that the previous boot failed due to an overclocking attempt.

So the RAM I have is working at 1333MHz right now.

Questions:

1) Was it presumptuous of me to simply expect to click 'xmp profile 1' and have the RAM work at its advertised speed?

2) Is my only option here now to try to manually tweak the speed/timings and see if I can match those advertised in the kit without using XMP on my motherboard?

Cheers,
Aristotelian

I don't think that kit is certified by Crucial to work with your motherboard.

I checked Crucial's site, and they list this kit as being compatible:

http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ga-p67a-ud7/CT4184269

9-9-9-27 timings.

The kit you linked to has timings of: 8-8-8-24

So, you can first go in and manually set the timings of the RAM. If that doesn't work, you can change the timings to the kit that is certified to work with your motherboard (they are "looser" timings, so it might work). They are both the same voltage.

If that still doesn't work, try updating your motherboard BIOS to see they released new BIOS updates to fix RAM compatibility issues. If that doesn't work, the RAM just might not work in your system.

Thanks a lot for your help, UsandThem. It seems like my secret santa probably forgot to check that compatibility list as did I before I opened the packet. Interesting that much faster pieces appear to be compatible with the board.

I'll try 9-9-9-27 at 1866 and 1.5V later today first and hope at least that is achievable and then play around a bit.

The kit that I originally linked is not the one I have at home, my mistake.

I have this one:

http://eu.crucial.com/eur/en/blt2cp8g3d1869dt1tx0ceu

which is identical to this one:

http://eu.crucial.com/eur/en/ga-p67a-ud7/CT4186117

I contacted Crucial through live chat on the EU website. The kits are identical, and compatible with the P67A-UD7. I have the latest BIOS available. The tech suggested that I test each module individually to see if they are fully operational or not.

I'll be doing that tonight - last night was an irritating number of boots and reboots, failed posts etc trying to get anything above the default speed to work.

Agree, Gigabyte and asus also. do have frequent update for( RAM compatibility issues)
