xmas upgrade specs?

ok, based on what people said about my 6800gt, and on other forums such as NVnews and anandtech, it looks like i need to upgrade from my xp2800+/1 gig pc2700 ram to something bigger. Now, here is where it gets tricky. What i want to know is...

1. What would be the most bang of the buck cpu/ram/mobo? AMD please. Would it be worth it to get a xp3200+ / 1 gig ddr400 ram? How much would that cost? WOuld i see a noticable difference over my 2800+, 1 gig ddr333?

2. If i asking stuff for xmas anyway, should i just upgrade to an amd64? I was thinking about getting a amd64 3200+, 1 gig ddr400, decent board. However, if i were to sell my cpu/mobo/ram now, how much would i get for it? i guess i could just parlay that into a greater cpu/ram/mobo combo.

current specs:

amd athlonxp 2800+
1 gig pc2700 Crucial
nforce 2 abi NF7
gf 6800GT

1. Not enough to justify the cost. Socket A is a dead platform.
2. Upgrade to an S939 A64 3000+ and an Abit AV8 and get some decent PC3500. Overclock it. I think you'd be getting in the 100-120 range for the CPU and motherboard.

if you guys would list some prices, and how much of a *noticable* difference i would get from my current platform that would be great.

thanks

i've got what i want and i just need to know one more thing. Right now, my setup stands as is:

amd64 3500+ (130nm) -- $262
abit av8 -- $111.
2x512 ddr400.

now, for the ddr400s, what would be a good brand/price? i saw crucial has them for a total of $180, but that is alot....

say, i read over in the nvnews forums that my current ram of 2x512dd333 was just fine and that i didn't need to buy the ddr400 ram. Is that true? Will my mobo still do dual channel with it?

Your current ram is not a good match if you ever want to overclock without ratios.
2700 is slower fsb than pc3200 which would be standard before overclocking.
Crucial makes good memory tho so you might try it and see how it responds.

You should see about 25% increase in performance applications if the meory doesn't bottleneck.
About 100% in gaming due to the awesome 6800 even at GT specs.

i don't OC at all so whatever potential i lose i don';t care.

I will see a 100% gaming fps jump? My fps will go twice as fast? hmm, where have u red that? Are there any sites that have a high end battle between ddr333 and ddr400 for the a64s?
