Hey, you've any 'old' Opteron 165s lying around? Man you seriously drop a lot of dough on CPUs...might as well make your own CPU website :)

nope....

I paid a lot for the 270's but not that much for these 265's...especially if I can get 2.4-2.6ghz like quite a few I have seen with this board....

I do it for free. I used to do it for Team Anandtech, until they were jerks to me. I am still 3rd on the team, comng up in my new team. Only 18 cores working.

Darn, I thought you were assembling your Conroe rig. :brokenheart:

Still am bro!!!

let me explain the story...A few months back I decided to build a dual dual core opteron setup. I chose to stay with AGP since I could soft quadro my new 6800GT, plus I also got a good deal on a Iwill mobo.

Deal:....

(1) 6800GT w/ NV5 at near ultra speeds
(8) 512mb Corsair Low Latnecy ECC DDR cas 2-3-2-6 (4gb total)
(1) Iwill Dk8x mobo
(2) Alpha heatsinks with 80 to 120mm fan converters and (2) 120mm fans

all for 600.00

After I assembled and received my opteron 270's which were week 08 of 2006 I started to get the bug to OC....The Iwill had no bios options and all my attempt to run window's based ocing apps failed...

So i decided to get an Asus K8n-dl mobo which is highly overclockable for opterons with voltage adjustments...However it was pci-express so now I needed to get another vid card. Got a 6800GT since it can still be soft-quadro'd.

But now I had an extra mobo and vid card....plus extra ram...

Got a great deal on an Antec Titan 550 case w/ PSU...So now I was just short some cpus and I would have another system. A folding Box

So basically I am going to take the worse ocers out of my 265 and 270's andplace them in the Iwill mobo with only 1gb of ram and my small 80gb Seagate and just have it be a folding box...

Hopefully the successful system will be either 265' at 2.6ghz or 270's at 2.6ghz...w/ 2gb of low latency ram...(2) 250gb maxtro drives in Raid 0, with a 300gb Samsung Backup drive....soft quadro'd 6800GT....This will be my power box/CAD box....At 2.6ghz and 4 cores I dont expect the Core 2 Duo to beat it even if I get in the 3.6-4ghz range....I will tes and see how close though...

The Core 2 duo system will be my Multimedia encoding box and overall box to play with....I was tired of ocing my main rig since I always had it tore apart (adding parts, trying new parts), reformatting, messing with drivers, etc....Need a fail; safe system always running...The conroe may live on the desktop for a period of time as I play with ocing. May get a water setup if I think heat is limiting me...

It's easier than folding laundry (arguably), and it's a wonderful thing for the ego (and perhaps conscience).

Congrats, Duvie, and happy farming. :)

Simulates protein folding to study how they interact in order to help understanding of certain diseases. Each fold takes ages and ages so they run a distributed computing network to harness spare CPU cycles from participants all over the world.

The systems described in this thread make me so jealous :(.
