You made a wise choice! The merger is still just a rumor, and for the time being you have the better of the two services.

No longer a rumor...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The two main satellite radio providers, XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. and Sirius are expected to announce a long-awaited merger on Monday, according to the New York Post.

The newspaper said the two companies were negotiating over the weekend to merge the companies, a deal that is expected to be structured as a "merger of equals."

Representatives of the two companies could not immediately be reached for comment.

It's still just heresay by the NY Post until they actually make a public statement. And after that it still has to get the greenlight from the FTC & SEC.

It is going to be a completely worthless merger. Xm and Sirius radios are *completely* incompatible. They might release dual format radios in the future, but they're going to have to keep the streams separate for quite some time. So the playlists will stay the same, and the sound quality will still be crap on both of them.

I'd be happy if they combined their bandwidth and actually put out decent sound, but thats unfeasible, so this is going to mean nothing to everyone but shareholders.
No competition means they won't compete by cutting costs or offering fewer commercials, offering more services...

ABC now seems to be picking up the story.

Regardless, it won't pass regulatory commission...

BTW, for those who don't think Sirius runs commercials, listen to RawDog. Not all Sirius stations run commercials, but some surely do. That said, I love Sirius.

Yeah, the talk stations feature some commercials, but the music stations don't.

Lord I hope Sirius buys XM. I know Sirius has more cash on hand than XM.

I do NOT want the clear channel music stations with commercials.

Even if that's the case, having more cash on hand does not necessarily imply a more successful/stable company. In some cases, it can mean the opposite. Also, have you checked stock prices lately? XM's at around $14, compared with Sirius around $4.

My biggest concern is what would happen to O&A vs. Stern...he's screwed them out of jobs before, it better not happen again.

The good is it would allow us to access a ton of programming, if they could design radios that can receive from both XM and Sirius satellites you'd be able to access everything under the sun.

The bad is it'd be a monopoly. I only have to point to the old monopolies of Ma Bell before breakup and the Intel processor market before AMD.

I'd love to be able to access both XM and Sirius content on one radio but not if it means ridiculous monopoly prices.

Stock price means nothing, it's all about market cap.

these are not horribly profitable companies here. I dont believe hat this is would be a monopoly and I doubt they would be able to charge monopoly prices. They have to compete with radio, and if you add in the IPOD in the car then its a rather huge market.

Stern doesn't care about them. I doubt he would have an issue. Look at Bubba the Love Sponge.
