SAN FRANCISCO ? A new XM Satellite Radio concept called "Dynamic Parking Information" shows the number of spaces available at a parking lot through a vehicle's navigation system.
The company, working with Nu-Metrics and InfoGation, displayed the concept at the ITS America World Congress here this week. XM Satellite Radio said the concept is the next logical step after providing drivers with continuously updated information about traffic and weather.
The concept shows spaces available at designated parking facilities and uses color-keyed icons to indicate the percentage of available parking spaces. Sensors embedded in the parking lots transmit information to the navigation system in the vehicle. XM Satellite Radio said it envisions the system making parking easier in congested areas such as airport garages and shopping centers.
What this means to you: XM is trying to cure parking-spot woes and, in the process, take vehicle navigation systems to the next level.
