XL tires. What is the low down?

My manual says I need 97Y XL tires, I know I can go with lower speed rating, but what about the XL? Sucker is almost 4K lbs

06 MB E350 4Matic. Looking for long life, I usually cruise around 120-130km/h on the highway so basically high performance all season. Can't afford to run expensive summer tires and probably a waste for me anyway. Looking at 245/40/18

figures... fewer choices... was thinking of going with conti ExtremeContact DWS @135 each but it's 93Y as opposed to 97Y XL


I like the Advan Sports I got on, but man they are expensive to run 🙁

Humm maybe the Yoko Avid W4s, 141 per and 97W XL reviews are not exactly stellar though

i got about 50k + miles on my yoko avids for the maxima. i think they are barely getting to the 2/32 throw away marks.

i just assume because your benz might be a heavier car then the normal 3200lb sedan, it somewhat needs a tire for that.

yoko avids. the performance was average but treadlife is GREAT. Noise was low

those are my top 3 concerns. everyone is diffrent.

low noise, high tread life and last is performance.

Stock is 16" and that doesn't have to be XL, the 18 inch one does say XL, which I kind of understand since it is a lot lower profile, exerting a lot more force on the sidewall.

page 449 on manual. Now that I look at it, it says sport package and summer tires requires XL... No all season nor winter listed.

Oh well. Better safe than sorry.

You have to remember the sport package on 4matic are different from the sport on 2WD. 2WD gets a nicer staggered setup IIRC while the sports package I have gave me 17" on all 4 corners 245/45/17 I think because the AWD setup and staggered wheel sizes isn't recommended by Mercedes.

You cant have a staggered set up with AWD unless it came like that from factory. like if the tires are 5% different from each other or something like that you will run into issues

We are talking Non-Staggered setup. Manual spec for 4matic says 18" summer tires need XL.
