I just saw an XJ220 thrash a Zonda 7.3 in a half a mile drag race.

The jag was heavier, older, and only had a V6 ( Turbo charged)

The zonda with its V12 Merc engine and ultra light shell got thrashed. Was it soley down to the turbo charger on the Jag ?

This was indeed really surprising. I've never really been a fan of the XJ220, but it clearly had a lot going for it in terms of straight-line speed.

The zonda has more BHP (550 IIRC) and the XJ has about 515, yet the jag has a higher top speed (217 vs 210)

Was this the one where they outfitted an old rusted jag with nitrous and raced it against supercars?

Or am I thinking about something else?

In a race that long, gearing might have a big part to play in it. Some supercars have a bunch of very close gears down low (for quick acceleration) and one spaced way out to take it to its top speed.

No idea on the specific specs of either car though, so I don't know. Just floating an idea.

Too bad I cant upload the video, the XJ was quicker from the start, the Zonda never got ahead..

I wish Jag would do an update, but the XJ220 was a flop :(

man, i wouldn't expect that...perhaps there was a difference in tyres used, or as someone stated, maybe the spacing of the gears favored the xj? I'd like a vid if you could provide.

I saw this too. The XJ220 is a nice car, but it will get it's ass handed to it by a Zonda around a track. That said, straight line speed, it wins because of it's turbos. If a turboed car is response tuned properly, the turbo will catapault the engine to redline much faster than a NA tuned engine can.

The Zonda has a high downforce body. Makes it a more confident drive at high speeds, as well as helps handling and braking. Not so good for high speed acceleration and top speed.

Interesting.

I saw a Zonda when I was in HK behind a Lambo!
