xircom pcmcia nic problem

i have an older p3 dell latitude with no built in nic, so i use a xircom 10/100/56k-modem pcmcia card. recently, i've been having this problem where it does not sense the cat5 cable when i plug it in -- no LEDs light up. and since the physical layer isnt coming up, i cant 'ipconfig /renew' etc. i try reseating it, and it *rarely* works (ie. it senses the cat5). i also try re-starting my laptop, and it *sometimes* works.

when i plug in my dlink 802.11g card, it always comes up on an IP right away ...

anyone have any ideas?

Perhaps the LAN jack is dirty or corroded - do you live in a humid envirnmnent? Try taking some contact cleaner to it. If not, maybe it's time to replace that PCMCIA NIC card. Newegg has a couple between 20 and 30 $s.

Not talking about the cable - taliking about the socket in the Xircom that the cable plugs into.
