XION PSU's.... question

I'm seeing this, and I'm trying to build a new system
Asus A8N-SLI mobo
AMD Athalon 64 X2 3800 Manchester
2 Gig Corsair XMS 3200 2-3-3-8 timing DDR
XFX 7900GT

I know I need a 500W+ Power supply to keep all these parts nice and juice happy, but I haven't built a new rig in over 2 years and am *VERY* out of the loop. Any feedback and suggestions would be greatly apprieciated.

PS: been looking for reviews on the XION PSU, couldn't find anything good/bad other than the reviews on Newegg.

I recently got that exact PSU (just got the rebate yesterday as a matter of fact). And this thing is solid! This thing drives my Asrock 939SLI32-ESATAII mobo, SIX HDs, TWO 7800 GT in sli, 7 fans, 2 DVD burners, X-FI, RAID card, 2 gigs of ram and about 7 usb devices and has not dipped below 12.11v on either rail. This baby is great. In use now for about 2 months, no issues so far.

No fight but a question worth thinking about.

Why would a current, stand alone system need the XION's 5V line at 52 AMPS??

Highly respected server SMPSs have only 40~45A to sopport>10 HDDs.

Can't hurt. The Xion does come with a lot of connectors. Overhead is better than under.

Generally but not always, lower tier PSUs hide wattage on the 5V rail. For a current rig, anything over 25A here is a waste.

For what you willing to spend on your components, you can't spend a little more to protect your system! I got an Enermax 535W for my graphic rig from Mwave for $99. I got a Seasonic S-12 600W for $130

There's always a way to get great deals if you really are patient and looking.

Three points.

1. You do not need anywhere near 500 watts.

2. Xion is a junk brand.

3. Be weary of who you take advice from on these forums regarding PSUs. I'm getting a little sick of seeing people throwing out 500 watt PSU for recommendations for systems that won't draw 250 watts (yours included).

YEP!!

A known quality SMPS of 400W for $70~$90 shipped is better than a lesser 600W for the same price.

Clean current output, low noise&ripple, will really help the whole system down stream 😉

With all due respect, you don't run a gaming rig. You have 4 HDD, yes, but a Radeon 9800 128 meg card, and only a gig of Ram. For the applications I run (BF2, BF:2142 eventually), the video cards tend to be power grubbers. There's a reason why the current crop of Video Cards have separate power hookups. It won't be long until video cards have their own pull starts. 500W may be a bit of overkill, yes.... but 250W will cause brownouts, or just won't be able to run the system period.

I don't think he was saying to get a 250w supply.

Check Anands tests and under load, an fx60 with a 1900xtx draws under 350w from the wall. Figuring say 75% efficiency, the components are using ~ 270w. So yeah, a solid 400w suipply like Galv said would be plenty.

Edit- wanting headroom is fine, its your money. I wouldn't be buying a xion myself.

I build several machines a year personally for customers, mostly friends and friends of friends. Many of which are equivalent or more power hungry then your own; I didn't put 500 watt PSUs in any of them.

As far as the 250 watt comment is concerned; it wasn't a PSU wattage recomendation but what your compoenents are likely to draw in DC, and that's a farily liberal estimate. For the same price as that Xion this Seasonic S12 would do a much better job.

For future referance read here to learn what real systems draw. It's not as much as you think.[/quote]

don't get that brand psu, but i also wouldn't get a 380watt seasonic when nvidia and newegg recommend minimum 400. i respect the people that do their research and read about psu's all day online, but i kinda trust nvidia more when they say minimum 400watt psu and 20A on 12v. that 380 watt psu only supplies dual 12v's @ 10a and 15a. i'm sorry not i'm PRO but i know its better to be safe than sorry. for your 7900gt KO theres a whole list of psu's i'd get but if i were given $100 budget i'd get

I'm not going to argue with you anymore, I think I've made my point. But I will say that one of the reasons why ATi and nVidia make such recommendations is because they know there are people out there that will use 400 watt PSU like this one.

Duly noted.

I will be waiting, and watching my back.

I have a very full PC and did that online wattage test where you can list all the crap that is in your system and it give you a wattage average and my system, according to the site, said I needed 520 watts at a 100% load. Now, due to summer coming with higher ambient temps and humidity PSU will be straining a bit more so I bought the XION based on what it could do, the number of connectors (very important to me because of all my stuff in the case) did some research on the company and its line of PSU and came to the conclusion that the 600w model I bought is perfect for my needs. 2 12v rails @22A on each rail with 6pin PCIE connectors on each rail was perfect for me. I havent found any negative reviews on it except for the occasional "My PSU blew and took my system with it" which you see for ANY psu regardless on the model. It is a great PSU and is very solid, stable and quiet. He may not need 600w now, but, like me, I didnt think I needed 600w either so I stuck with my old 400w A-Open for years, then as i added my 4th and 5th HD and my second video card I had some issues that a 600w PSU (the XION) fixed. More is bettter than less.
