The backplate kit is to provide a different mounting method than the default Intel push-pin design that some people detest. It's not wrong to use the push-pins, but they can be hard to install properly for some people. I believe there was a thread here a few days ago with an article comparing the two mounting systems for the 1283, but I didn't read it.

My heatsink came with a backplate/screw mounting system standard, so that's what I used.

Edit: As far as using the backplate from the Zalman, I don't know whether that would work or not.

I used my Zalman backplate for the X-1283 with some mod had to figure out the height from the base were the spring clip hold down sits of the Zalman down to the base and add a washer to the base of the X-1283 to make up the difference. Plus I glued the washer and small nut for the clip to fit in just like the Zalman on the X-1283 and it worked just fine. About 1 3-5c coller with the X over the Zalman.
