Well not only does it have an extra HP but the cooling fins are larger as well. This offers more surface area to dissipate the heat from. But yes more pipes tend to equal better cooling. Each pipe is only able to carry a certain amount of heat and at a certain speed. So the more you have the more heat is moved during that time frame. Then of course the more surface area is available across the cooling fins the fast that heat is able to be drawn away from the pipes and dissipate. That allows the liquid inside the pipes to condense and go back to the source of the heat to gather more and carry it back to the area of the fins. Yes it will fit the same area the smaller one will. Its just slightly fatter then the other one.

NO DONT GET THE S1284. it cools WORSE and is more expensive! the heatpipes being offset the way they are ends up giving you less contact area on the IHS between the 4 pipes than the S-1283. if you're going to spend that much on a cooler you might as well get a tuniq tower though anyway. that cooler performs better still and it costs the same as the S-1284. the cooling difference is significant, adding up to a couple degrees difference in testing

You are basing your opinion on a single review. You can find probably at least 4 reviews saying that this cooler is one of the best on the market. Oh and read the editors note bellow:

"EDITORS NOTE 05/09/2008: Xigmatek has issued to following statement following the release of our article:

Hi Olin: I need officially to apologize for this issue, the Achilles you have received was sending accidentally. It was supposed only to be sending for showing purpose. As I mentioned before, the Achilles you got wasn't finalized in reference of technical... We will update you very soon with the finalized model after Computex as one of our first reviewers worldwide. Tony Sahin, Xigmatek "

I'm not taking Xigmatek side here, just because I own one and hell, I'm not impressed by its performance, but from other reviews, S1284 is a better cooler then the S1283 and far better then what this review shows.

Frankly, if I was to buy a good air heatsink, I would go for a TRUE, but the S1284 can still do its job, no doubt about it.

lol doh i read the review before the editor's note was posted. also, the S-1284 looks to have come down in price from when i was originally looking to buy a cooler in that range. you probably will get your monies worth.

Frostytech also rates the S1283 higher than the S1284EE http://www.frostytech.com/top5heatsinks.cfm. Both are good coolers as is the Tuniq but for the money it's hard to beat a Xiggy S1283. $22 after MIR and free shipping from the Egg and you can get a mounting kit from Sidewinders for around $7 shipped. Plus the Xiggy is not as heavy as the more expensive top coolers.

Yeah I wanted a S1283 too but I shop at amazon using my amazon card. always adds up to big savings for me. They did not have the S1283 so i found the s1284 and thought the same like mpilchfamily that it should cool better than the S1283. I guess it does not but the real deal breaker for me is that its the exact same price as my T120 if the T120 is going to do a better job then why stick with the S1283.
