Xigmatek HDT-S1283 -- $25 AR w/free ship

The retention bracket costs $6.99 + shipping of $6.99. Not too much of a bargain when you add in the $13.98.

I picked this up earlier this month. After i got it they posted the rebate, which nicely included the date of my purchase! I went from outside my case 53°C stock to 39.5°C with this cooler with an e7200 @3.2. Inside my case (Cosmos) it went up to 41°C. I'm happy with it. Haven't tested load conditions yet.

I'm new to aftermarket coolers ... I'm concerned about lower fins of this cooler interfering with the fairly tall radiator on the north bridge of my Biostar P965 . Any thoughts on this? Also, if I'm not overclocking to the moon -- do I need the supplied fan attached to the cooler (I recall reading reviews of Thermalright Ultra-120 doing quite well without a fan).

in general, the fins should clear... have had problems with 939 clips (like on a ninja) bumping into things...

the fins should output toward the rear of the case (straight into your rear case fan is good...)...

the newer hsf's are a bit better as far as not bumping into pieces on the mobo...

It makes a big difference without the fan I think. I don't have any hard facts for you so it's speculation from what I have seen in comparable coolers, going from passive to active cooling. You may get away for normal usage, no OC. I wouldn't be surprised if this cools passively as well as the stock cooler does active provided you have case exhaust airflow near this like mine does. The fan is really quiet though I must say.

Yeah, in my case exhaust fan is just next to the cooler. Can I snap the fan AFTER the cooler is in place and mobo is put back in the case? If so, I'll see how it goes without the fan first and then add it if necessary.

I think you better put that fan in even if you got an exhaust behind it.

But haven't AT tested Termalright Ultra-120 WITHOUT a fan and found it quite Ok? And don't we think that XIGMATEK is an improvement upon Ultra-120?

I don't think anyone would say that the XIGMATEK is better than a TRUE. It is just very good for its price. Kind of like the Freezer 7 or Freezer 64 are good coolers for the money. The TRUE is one of the best, if not the best cooler on the market.

Very small improvement. They are both top notch coolers that are in the top 5% in most reviews. Still though, like I said before, removing the fan can be drastically different. Like going from 35C to 45C. No or little OC, good ventilation and moderate ambient temps, I would think this cooler could run passive reasonably well. I would test it out myself but I busted my butt getting this cooler on (crap pins) and I don't even want to look at it again for a while.

Hm-m ... this comparison says that XIGMATEK is better performance-wise, not just on price/performance.

OP, thanks. Got the cooler, ordered backplate from Sidewinder (thanks AmberClad). Is there something for Linux (Ubuntu) to do the temp comparison? .. and while I am at it -- is there a zCPU analog?

I have the Red Scorpion version of the 1283 (pretty much the same thing but looks a bit nicer) and it cools my E8400 very well. With the CPU at 4.0GHz @ 1.344V, Prime temps top out at ~60C according to RealTemp. When it comes to Linpack 64-bit it keeps temps at ~66-67C. @ 3.8GHz w/ 1.296V.... even Linpack 64-bit stays well below 60C.

I don't know if it is better than the TRUE performance wise, but when it comes to price/perf this is definitely better IMO. Remember that this includes a fan in the $27 price, meanwhile TRUE costs $60 without a fan.

I use this one. They offer cheap first class mail as an option.

The linked item doesn't seem to work with the stock Xigmatek. It doesn't have the proper mounting materials for the stock Xigmatek. It only includes the backplate, four screws and four springs. I can't see how to get that bracket to work and I'm desperate to try since I bought both without investigating enough. The push pins on the stock Xiggy are a nightmare for me.

Does someone know how to get the linked mounting unit to work with the stock Xigmatek?

The included fan is PWM with 4-pin header...I would keep the fan and use your motherboard's BIOS to spin it down to the lowest speed. Minimal airflow makes a big difference over none at all. At full speed, the fan definitely isn't suitable for a quiet PC.

Pull the plastic push-pins out of the Xigmatek brackets and use the brackets with these screws and backplate.

Or for an easier install, get the Xigmatek one for $9.98 shipped at chiefvalue.com. Linking it doesn't work for some reason, so just go to the site and search for Xigmatek...it's the first item.

With the Xigmatek, my e7200@3.32 idles at 41 and peaks at 62 under load (Orthos testing, used HWMonitor to check the core temps). This is with the Xigmatek fan at 850rpm (lowest I could go) and a rear case fan spinning even slower.

the sunbeam (also known to many as Tuniq) Core Contact Cooler has pretty much been the #1 or #2 cooler for a while now.
it uses more heatpipes at a much closer spacing on the base so there isnt such a huge chunk of alumunim between the copper heatpipes.

it beats the bullcrap TRUE (count yourself lucky if you get a TRUE with a flat base) and the ocz units, and the Xigmatech, and all the others.

It "barely" beats the S1283 in the Frostytech tests and the cheapest I've found it with shipping is $41.00. That doesn't compare very well to the $24.03 that you can get the S1283 for right now.

You can get the Sumbeam Core Contact for 35 + shipping at xoxide.com. It has a very smooth base compared to the s1283 and it comes with a mounting system that works. It also comes with a fan controller and tuniq thermal grease. Its an equally good deal for around 42 shipped.
