I've tried Xgl and Aero glass, and I'd have to say I like aero glass better. It runs fine on my system. It looks better, and I don't think the features of Xgl are that great...it looks boring to me. And the jellow windows are fun for a bit, but I got tired of them.

Sticking to aero (which I'm sure will be a lot better, at least optimized, in the future).

xgl ftw.

got suse 10.1 running on my main rig, dual boot setup. i im love with it. suse 10.1 itself is great, and xgl is just the icing on the cake.

You should probably be stating Compiz. XGL is just a X server. Compiz has many more effects so I find it much better. Requirements seem to be lower too, and it's more customizeable with all the plugins.
