I'm looking at upgrading from a PNY Verto 256MB GeForce 5200 to a XFX 6800 Xtreme 256MB/256-bit, but I have one little question...

Who the bloody heck is XFX?!?!

I've been out of the loop for a bit, but I typically shy away from companies I am unfamiliar with. Regardless, their cards seem to be well reviewed at Newegg, and I can get the above card for $145 new. In addition, they "look 1337". Is this a company I should be wary of? How does a 6800 Xtreme compare with a 6800 Ultra? Do standard 6800 aftermarket coolers fit these cards?

Thanks in advance!

I guess that helps. But are they good, bad, indifferent?

EDIT: Also, should I consider putting on a NV5 cooler with one of these cards?

Most people around here swear by eVGA. What's interesting to know is XFX was the only manufacturer that nVidia allowed to sell factory-overclocked versions of the 7950GX2. That's got to account for something.

I was a big fan of how their all-black 7900GTs looked.

hehe I had hit reply before finishing -- it was a mistake.

I was in your situation 6 months ago when I saw XFX posters all over the hardware stores. I was like... who the heck are they?

If you are going 6800 go for it. The buyers are newegg have nothing but praise for them. Like I said, it is a fantastic overclocker for my young bro.

Some of the xfx 7900s have some issues though.

As for a cooler, nvidia has excellent software for monitoring temp. Use the stock and see how it goes.

edit:

I can testify to the looks. My bro's XFX 6800 looked a lot sweeter than my BFG 7800GTX. haha.

eVGA is the best easily, but they are also more expensive.

Most will recommend BFG because the company provides a nice balance between performance and price. Plus their customer support is excellent.

But again, the XFX's overclock beyond their XFX OC settings very nicely. Check out the reviews on newegg.

XFX is excellent. They offer a life time warranty to the first 2 owners. That means if you buy it new and then sell it, the guy who buys it from you is covered too.

XFX is very good however ide go with eVGA just because i think step-up is AMAZING, and their game bundles usually are pretty nice(either included or registered later).

Heh, I'm begining to feel foolish that I've never heard of them before. I assumed them to be some low-level knock-off brand, but I guess I'll take that back. I usually go eVGA as well, but the local parts store doesn't have access to eVGA for a comparable price, and, honestly, I'm a little taken by the aesthetics of the card. Black boards are relatively attractive, is what I'm getting at here.

Any more thoughts/comments are welcome!

Heh I remember when my Bro inlaw bought a eVGA Ti4200 about 3-4 years ago and I was thinking to myself. Man thats a generic brand. I think they was fairly new with video cards at the time but not for sure. Anyway today everyone likes them mostly because they allow after market cooling and(I think) o/cing with there warranty. As long as you don't mod or do any physical damage to the card they will RMA it. As for XFX I owned a 6800GS for about 4 months with no issues.

If you can swing another $35 or so you can get one of these and they beat the Nvidia 6 series in all games:

They are $139 after rebate. I went with the Evga and put a Zalman cooler on it.

I went with an XFX 7900GT EE when I upgraded this past spring, and I have to say that the card is excellent. With no voltmods I can do 580/820 (per detect optimal clocks test via coolbits), but I leave it at 550/800. The card is great for any game at 1280x1024, which matches my 19" LCDs native resolution, with 4xAA and 8xAF and high quality settings enabled.

I would love to get a 7600GT, but I'm afraid I'm limited to an AGP motherboard and do not have the funds to change that. What I'm looking for is a card that will run WoW at 1440x900 with 2 or 4AA/8 or 16 AF in addition to Warcraft III, HL2, and F.E.A.R. (I know, system hog).

I appreciate all the comments, please feel free to continue sharing!

I'd put BFG and eVGA on top, with XFX right under them, although they're really really close it really doesn't matter too much.

XFX is pretty good. The peopel saying there were issues with the 7900 series.... Well.... I think all the manufacterers of the 7900 series has issues certianly not just XFX.

XFX is a pretty decent AIB partner from Nvidia, they are NV only, though on the NV side I prefer eVGA, though BFG is decent as well.

It seems the top three nVidia vendors are BFG, eVGA, & XFX.

Either way, you are likely to get a good card/good service.

Eh, it's not surprising considering it's these 3 AIB that offer Lifetime Warranties and great service.

I have a deal pending with another Anand member for a BFG 256MB 6800GT OC w/NV5 cooler or $170. It's pending in that the other guy has until today to mail the payment or it's mine. If that falls through (as there's a good chance it will fall through for me), I'm thinking that XFX is the way to go.

Feel free to continue with personal experiences/opinions/stories/etc. The more I know... the more I know :)
