XFX X58i + i7 920 overclock problem

I am running an Intel i7 920 through a XFX X58i motherboard. I am using a large cpu fan, so I would like to overclock to at least 3ghz. I went into the bios and was able to alter the QPI bus and the Ram speed.

I set the RAM speed to force 1333mhz (that is my ram's supported speed)
I then set the QPI from 133 to 166. When I changed the QPI I lost all video after exiting the BIOs. I reset using the CMOS reset button on the back of the motherboard (restoring bios to default) which restored my video.

My question is, what have I been doing wrong? Why would changing the QPI force me to loose video? What is the best way of overclocking the CPU using my current hardware? What settings do you recommend for votlage, qpi etc...?

Thanks in advance.

This is what I have to work with...

I am nt sure about all the settings, but you may want to turn off C1E, eist, etc.. when overclocking.

And welcome to the forums !!

I just tried disabling various settings, with no luck. I have an Asus p6t deluxe on order. Maybe that will be a better board for overclocking.

Not too many people here even have I7's, but if you are patient, I am sure someone will respond who has one.

Check out these threads: Our forum thread
bit-tech article

There are other threads around here too.

I think all you have to do for that small OC is change BCLK setting.

(no experience yet, just been lurking (mostly) here for a couple months to gain knowledge before purchasing)

I think I know the problem. This screen is where you disable all the crap like C1E and EIST, etc... There is another screen where those other settings are changed.

OK, the last 2 screens are the ones you need to mess with. Disable spreadh spectrun everywhere you see it. Then check the link that Gleem showed on how to OC this baby !

I just altered voltages, i also disabled the items listed in the link provided above. For some reason, still, the board will not let me change the bclk. Everything i enable or disable or alter still doesnt allow me to change the bclk speed. Without being able to alter it, i really don't see how it's going to overclock.

I have a support request pending at XFX. I asked if they could direct me as to how to enable the ability to alter the bclk speed. If I dont get any results from them, I will be switching to an Asus P6T deluxe. It looks as thought the P6T is much easier to tweak.

Thanks again for the help.
