XFX RS RX 480 crashes in BF1

After playing BF1 anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes, my screen will go black and freeze. The fans are still on, but I cannot seem to recover the PC. I have to give it a hard reset. I used MSI Afterburner to look at temps and everything seems fine as far as I can tell. Thoughts?

My system is:
Antec BP550 power supply
i7 2600k @ 4GHz
Biostar TZ68+
16GB RAM
XFX RS RX480 8GB

I am just using the stock settings, no overclocking. I had a 7870 previously with no issues. I really don't think it is the power supply. I will have to try some other games to see if it happens in them too, but I don't really play a lot.

That doesn't sound like it's a video card issue. How old is your PSU? Your RX 480 could also be showing that your overclock is unstable.

I have the same GPU but powered by a CM V750 PSU, 62A on a single +12V rail yet i cannot play a game because system shuts down on high load...

I tried going back to stock on the i7, no change. Tried BF4, it also crashes. Searching around forums, it looks like this is a common issue for the RX480. I have started the warranty process with XFX so we will see where this ends up. If I was still in the return window I would just return it and get an nVidia card, but now I have to deal with RMA and stuff. Ugh.

^ This suspiciously new poster suspiciously reinforcing tripe about AMD cards crashing knows what's up (though I doubt anyone can take their claims seriously).

Problem was obviously most likely OPs PSU especially considering the triple rail design. It seems there are plenty out there both spreading and eating the tripe.

Nope, im asking for help here.

(Bottom of 2nd page)

Also made a topic at tomshardware.

System shutdown with a "Tier One" Cooler Master V750 PSU (62A on one rail)... is beyond me.

I just ordered a seasonic G550, hope i will have more luck with this one, although its a much less powerfull PSU than the V750.

Yeah that's a perfect example of the OP and thread title blaming a 480 for what was actually a PSU problem. And you replied in that thread to another complete newcomer who seems to be blaming a 480.

I simply don't believe your situation is genuine. Call me cynical but I've been into hardware, and on the internet, long enough to have my own opinions on how the world works. If you are genuine I suggest you find one of the many many threads on this site about troubleshooting. Plus if you were actually asking for help I would have expected you to be in the Computer Help section or maybe General Hardware.

Geeesh, all we are doing here is asking for help! Using simple A/B testing, it seems like both of us have swapped in a new video card, and have issues. Therefore we both assume the new part added is the faulty part. I know that this conclusion could be wrong, and it could be a whole host of other issues, but we are doing our best to figure out what is wrong. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to buy a whole second PC worth of parts to troubleshoot something.

XFX is giving me the typical steps that I have seen elsewhere thus far. Update bios. Remove and reinstall drivers. Nothing works so far. I am tempted to buy another PSU today, or another video card to see if it fixes anything. Who has the best return policy on PC parts? I have a local Best Buy, otherwise I have to use an online vendor. Newegg or Amazon?

When you say your screen goes black and freezes, do you continue to hear audio, or do you mean your system hard locks?

In any event, shutting down under high load or going black while gaming tends to be the PSU... I had a defective Seasonic PSU once which led to crazy throttling-like behavior of the GPU, making me think it was the GPU. I replaced the thermal paste on the GPU to no avail. But swapping it into a known-good system ultimately helped me narrow it down to the PSU. Never would have guessed.

When it crashed last night, the audio did continue to play, but I don't think that ever happened in the previous crashes. I guess I will try to grab a PSU today.

Check the card in a known good system. My money is on power supply issue. If just the video card crashes it doesn't take down the whole machine, it blanks, then the card reloads and the drivers recover.

In all my years of troubleshooting computers, 75% of the time or more when there's a hardware problem it's either the motherboard or the PSU

So far so good with a new power supply! Played a couple rounds of BF1 with no issues! Hope this fixes it. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Will update if anything changes.

Good to hear that the new PSU helped. BF1 is too fun and crashing is not fun when you're in the heat of battle.

Good stuff dude. I know I came across as cranky-pants, but I hope I also helped a little.. Most of the time threads like this (and with titles like this) are started by those who have done a little searching and discovered the fantasy of bad AMD drivers. Plus they know just enough about computer hardware to be suffering "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" syndrome.

But most OPs don't have the maturity to take advice and update the thread with a solution. Especially when the solution goes against their initial assumptions. So thanks and good luck.
