They have found a way on some of the 1gb refs, but much safer going with the 2gb versions; pretty much guaranteed.
This makes the purchase more worthwhile. The 6950 2gb refs are basically 6970's with some things disabled or turned down

Almost went for this to upgrade my HD 5770 - but according to the Newegg reviews, this card seems to be close to 50/50 whether it will be DOA or die within a month, or work. Of course Newegg reviews can't be completely trusted but it's hard to ignore a trend like this - will stick with my HD5770 until a deal for a different card rolls around - hopefully a 2GB reference design.

And who knows, maybe by then bitcoin will be dead so I can just be happy with my HD5770 that runs every game I play fine 😀

Quick question . . . How can one tell if a given HD6950 is a "reference" model - and therefore can be unlocked to a 6970?
