Found this xfx 5870 variant on newegg for $400. By the looks of it, it has a larger fan, similar to the vapor x design perhaps? I am wondering if it is worth getting over the stock fan design, and how much better it would be. I am not so concerned about noise, but more with overclock ability.

I hesitate for 2 reasons, well, MB 3. Newegg charges tax because I live in California, and it would be cheaper to get the standard xfx 5870 from tiger direct or amazon (no tax). Also, I want to make sure this is actually a better design as far as temps go. And, I am not sure if I should wait for a GTX 480 instead. I guess this makes 4 things, as I am also looking at getting a new monitor to go with it at the same time. I am consider this, but like this new card, I know little about it.

It's too expensive if you live in Cali. You'll be paying $446.55 for this thing. Just get it from somewhere cheaper and pick up a reference design. You're the only one who can say if you want to wait for Fermi. I got tired of waiting. People say wait but new things are always around the corner so I see no reason to.

thanks for the advice. I will probably just go for the cheapest xfx card then, from TD or something. Still would like to know about the monitor though, my goal is a good 1920x1200 monitor for under 300 bucks, which the one I posted seems to satisfy, though I dont know much about the company.

nice, that one has about 7/8 4 or 5 stars. I don't usually put too much stock in newegg reviews, but when you have 400+ of them and the vast majority are favorable that's a big plus in my book.

fwiw, I have a vh226h at work and love it. I don't game on it, however. very much. at least, as far as the boss knows. ;)
