XFX Geforce 7900 GS FPS Dropping Issues

Hey all,

I just got a new XFX Geforce 7900 GS PCIe x16 card for my system. I have an Asus P5LD2 mobo with PD 3.4GHz CPU and 4GB of RAM. I did have a Radeon x1600 in the system.

I installed the vid card yesterday and installed the latest drivers from Nvidia (93.71) and uninstalled the ATI Radeon drivers before.

I have noticed that when I start playing Quake 3, the FPS will be pretty low. Anywhere from 100 fps down to 30 fps (looking across the map on CTF4). /com_maxfps is at 120 - When using my Radeon x1600 I could get 125fps in Q3 constant no matter what map or graphics settings. It's odd because Q3 will start out with low FPS at first, then it's as if the vid card starts processing at full capacity and I can finally get a solid 125fps after a few minutes of specing in Q3.

Here's the strange thing - a few months ago when I ordered an XFX GF 7600GT and tried it in the same mobo, the system did the same thing no matter what I tried. I ended up taking the 7600 GT out and putting it in another system (and it worked fine in that system - ASRock mobo).

I also have the latest Intel chipset drivers installed. I tried the 96.81 drivers that were on the XFX CD and it is not helping anything. I have the latest BIOS for my motherboard as of yesterday and that hasn't helped. I am at a loss as of what else to try other than getting a new mobo. Which is appealing to me because I want a new mobo.

I wanted to ask for any opinions/suggestions for my problem however.

I just tried Q3 again and this time the FPS didn't "go up" to its best. It hovered around 25-80 the whole game.

Inadequate power supply? Maybe it's throttling down due to lack of power??

You need to run Driver Cleaner 3.3 or some other driver cleaner program.

I have a 7900GS and get way over 500FPS in Q3. Text

Neg, vsync is not on. I went through that the first time =(

I actually considered this. What I have now is a Coolermaster 500w with 12cm fan, I think.

Shouldn't that suffice? I only have one optical drive, a Raptor 74GB, and that's about it.

I reinstalled the chipset drivers earlier using the latest Chipset Install from Intel. Still no luck =(

UPDATE:
Got a new motherboard, fresh install of Vista 32bit, SAME problems.....so what else can it be other than the PSU, CPU, or a stick of my RAM? Please note that I have not tried another game yet (because I mainly play Q3 only) but I have tried a fresh config file in Q3 (everything default) and it does the same thing...grrr.....this is so frustrating...
I'm leaning towards the PSU or a stick of RAM

Tried a Thermaltake TR2-430 PSU on hand - no luck
Tried removing my two "older" 1GB sticks of DDR2 - no luck
Tried pulling out my WinFast TV 2000/XP TV Tuner - no luck......

No, because I did a fresh format without any drivers (except Windows default drivers) installed when I had the 7900GS in the system =(
