Perhaps the wrong forum, but done this question is about a video card o thought I'd give out a shot.
Has anyone had to send in a video card that had aftermarket cooling?
I'm having issues with an old 7900GT that has a Zalman cooler on it. They state that I need to put the original cooler back on it. The problem is I purchased it used & that's the way it came.
Am I SOL?

probably. warranties are not always transferable (but in the XFX case they do have double lifetime warranty meaning it is transferable) and if you put a cooler on it you void warranty.

but is it really worth the trouble? most sub 100$ cards will outperform a 7900GT these days.

Yes you must have the original heatsink, I don't think they honor the warranty without it.

Posters above are correct. It's not worth dealing with XFX's customer service over a 7900GT anyway. Just buy a new $60 card and you'll be good to go.

What exactly are they going to offer in exchange for your defective 7900gt at this point? Can you find that out beforehand to see if it is worth it to track down the original heatsink?

If you don't have the original equipment, they don't want to talk to you. That goes for pretty much all companies out there.

What sets some companies apart are the "OMG YOU MODIFIED THAT? WE WON'T TOUCH IT!" attitude. Some will say "yeah, just put the original heatsink back on and we'll replace it for you, as long as you haven't damaged it yourself," while others will balk at the idea that you've removed a single screw from the thing.

Nearly three years ago I RMA'd an XFX 7900 GT and got back an 8600 GTS. I did some research at the time and figured it was a reasonable exchange - the 7900 GT was faster in older games but slower in newer games.

I'd imagine these days anything above the bargain basement level would suffice.

Got an e-mail back from them & they're not going to help.
Kinda sucks that the cooler on there is better than stock, but oh well.
They never mentioned replacing it, just for me top send it in for repair.
Can anyone tell me how to flash the bios? They seem to think that's what the problem is, but I was unsuccessful to flash it with the file they sent.

What would be a decent, comparable, inexpensive, replacement for the 7900GT? It doesn't necessarily have to be new.

Any idea on what you want to spend ?

Less that $75

8600GTS, 8800GT, 9800GT, 9800GTX, 9800GTX+, HD4830, HD4850, HD4860, HD4870, HD5670, HD5750, HD5770, GTS450, GT240.

E6300/Antec 550 (came with the Antec Solo its' encased in).
The only games she plays is on Pogo.
She does dabble with Photoshop & occasionally 3d Home Architect.

I found a GTS250 w/an Arctic Cooling hsf on it for $50.
I'm hoping that'll be sufficient.
Thanks for everyone's help.
