3DMark shows it to be equivalent to 7900GT SLI. Oh noez, this means 8800GTS SLI > 7950GX2 Quad-SLI! I thought Quad-anything will pwn forever! :p

j/k

Performance is exactly double (min/avg/max) in Call of Juarez, compared to the 7950GT. The FPS Distribution in FEAR is pretty nice too. Can't wait for the reviews to show up at the major sites. Thanks McArra, for the preview.

EDIT: DOh! 6 more fps in FEAR.

True, but I bet the 8800GTS's frames will continue to hold high as the AA is increased whereas the X1900XTX will take a good hit going from 4x to 6x. I'm interested into seeing what the GTS's performance is with SSAA. I guess we'll find out when nVidia gives him a working driver control panel.

It better or else the GTS is going to fall flat on its face. Either that or it better release at $350

The 8800 GTS is likely going to be faster then the 7900 GTX and X1950 XTX, and with it Shader Model 4.0 Feature set a price of 449 USD for it ain't bad.

the X850 series was a semi-dead product, NOT that it is/was bad..but quickly replaced by the X1xxx cards and therefore not THAT widely used. IMHO.

Also...i remember the fiasco how long it actually took from "paperlaunch" to get one....not even MENTIONING the XT PE...so i can see people ordered this but after MONTHS of waiting just jumped ship and went with NV.

When it was out/available..it didnt take long and the other cards came out.

Hardly what I would call a quick replacement consider the X850 cards were launched in December, and the Radeon X1K Series didn't arrive till October the following year.

The X800 Series your talking about not the X850's which were alright. The only problem with the X850 series was that when it started competing with the 7800 GTs in August the following year and really showed hot dated they were, in terms of shader technology.

Nice preview McArra :)
Thanks for benching some real games, unlike the 3dmark monkies out there.

The benchies look pretty bad especially in Fear.
Even my rig manages around 100 or even more avg FPS at 12x9 MAX 4x 16x HQ, and their card at 16x10 just managed about 60, I would say even mine should manage the same.

Try FEAR at 1680x1050 4xAA and 16xAF, all settings maximum, soft shadows off, and then get back to us.

It would also be kewl if someone with a similar rig to akshayt's run the same. Just to prevent fibbing of any sort. ;)

That'd be why. ;)

Besides, I bet the 8800GTS will offer playable SSAA in FEAR and its AF is already better to boot.

Didn't your computer have insane problems with running modern games at decent speeds?

Why are people jumping to conclusions, with a cards performance at its infancy.

It takes time to mature. Im actually overwhelmed by the GTS performance, because we all know as drivers mature, the GTS will start performing to its full potential. (im thinking extra 20% like all other cards)

If it matches the X1950XTX and 7950GX2, then the GTS will be a better buy in terms of

-power consumption (based on DTs power numbers of the GTX)
-similiar PCB size
-cooling is much better than 7950GX2
-MUCH better IQ than the 7950GX2, and a better IQ than the X1950XTX thanks to the already impressive NVs AA mode and its new angle independent AF which is much better than ATis one (not sure how it will affect IQ though)
-cheaper than 7950GX2 and maybe similiar in price to X1950XTX
-Does not suffer SLi limitations compared to 7950GX2 and crossfire/sli setups

Im sure theres other stuff, but really did the R520 on the day of release had the hdr plus AA function? same goes with its h.264. It takes time, and with driver updates will see this happening.

You cant really expect 100% performance and maturity from day one.

edit - DX10 and S.M 4.0 is just icying on the cake really.

Sorry, that was with Shadows off.

With Shadows on at 12x9 no SS, 4x AA 16x AF, I get:
61 avg
27 min

However I would expect more than a 8800GTX than just 79FPS at 16x10 4x AA 16x

Agreed it is reasonably faster but the difference is not night and day, it is not the same difference at most as that of a 7800GT to 1900XTX.

79 FPS on Average, at those settings, is a wonderful score, akshayt. Anyway, we'll see come tomorrow. :D

Still, its relative performance to the GTX will remain the same. 8 less quads, 32 less shaders (75% of the GTX), 64 bits smaller memory bus (83% of the GTX), and 75MHz/100MHz difference on the core/memory (about 88% of the GTX) end up equating to a 30-40% performance deficit.

I think the days of turning 2nd tier cards into 1st tier performers are over. It looks like Nvidia and ATI are going to make sure that the performance gap is large enough to push buyers to the more expensive high end cards.

I do have to agree with you. Remember the 6800GT compared to a 6800ultra?

Not to mention the 7800GT compared to a 7800GTX.

This time, nVIDIA might be truly create gap between their flag ship and 2nd high end card.

@Nightmare225
why will I be coming tomorrow?
Are you by any chance switch at TE?
I have doubts as his RIG is different.

:laugh: :laugh::laugh::laugh:

He said, "We'll know come tomorrow" as in when tomorrow comes. Not as in when you come.
