Just picked up an XFX 8800GT and installed the drivers and utils of the disk that came in the box.
After running the card for about 15 - 20 minutes, I decided to check the temperature by touching the plastic covering on the heatsink - it was almost too hot to keep my finger on it.
I also noticed that the fan on the card seemed to be running at a slow speed.
I checked the Vtune app that was installed with the drivers - the temp reading indicated 70 deg C - ouch!
There appears to be 2 options in Vtune for fan control - 1 as auto fan control and the other uses a set fan speed for 2D & 3D apps
I decided to use the latter and raise the 2D fan speed to 60% - resulting in te temp dropping to 58 dec C.
So is the temp of 70 deg C normal for these cards and is there an app that adjusts the fan speed in relation to the card temperature ?
