Hi all

I need a new video card since my 8800GT blew out after 2 years. I have about 200$ to spend and I was recommended the 6870.

People are telling me to be careful of my power supply, that I may need a new one. Its about 3 years old and alot of comments on newegg say it has died after 3 years. Also the warranty is 3 years long, coincidence? Anyway.. I'm just worried the 6870 will be too much for my current PSU. Will I be okay?

Here's a link of the power supply I own. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817341001

Should I invest in a new PSU on top of the video card?

Is the 6870 a good investment to make right now? I'd like a card I can use for the next 2-3 years. Also XFX 6870 has a lifetime warranty so thats a huge plus.

Or is there another card I should take a look at?

My rig =

Asus P5K-E MoBo
OCZ 600W GameXStream

6gigs G.Skill ram

600w is more than enough for an HD6870.

The only reason to invest in a new PSU is because you actually think it might die, you certainly don't need one for just an HD6870.

Thanks!

Yeah, I first I was mostly worried about the wattage and amp ratings (taken words from friends mouths)

Then I went to look at my PSU on newegg to read comments and it caught my attention that it could die soon. Ive had some small symptoms on the PSU such as the fan not spinning sometimes.

Anyway, I guess I'll purchase the card soon and worry about the PSU another time.

Thanks again!

I have the same PS as you except mine is 700w. Both the 600w and the 700w have 4 18 amp rails for a total output of 72 amps. I'm running 2 heavily overclocked GTX 460 1GB (v1) fine.

PSUs can last for years, but change it after 10 years or so.

but they can also die sooner than later, like the 8800 i had =[

thanks to all for replies, ill be going for it with the mindset that everything will be okay =]

Just food for thought:

I had the same PSU, mine died a couple months ago. I think I had it for about 4.5 years or maybe 4. It was however, a graceful death - the system just started to be unstable (bluescreens during any game).
