Which is the better card for the money?

Those are both overpriced. A 9600XT should be worth closer to $100-120, and for around the same price as that 6600 you can get a much better 6600GT.

It looks like you're looking for cards only with 256MB of RAM--be advised that without something like a 6800GT to back it up, it doesn't improve performance much right now. A 128MB card is fine. If more RAM's on a midrange card like this, the chips are likely slower, too.

My friend that I'm posting this for is just wanting to be able to run Half Life 2 smoothly. He currently has a Gateway computer (sigh) with 256 mb of PC133 (he's going to buy a stick of 512 with his new graphics card purchase, aswell) and 1.5ghz P4. A few years old I believe. Currently has 64 mb TNT2 in it.

I have the 6600 256MB PCI Express and this thing runs like a champ. I wish i went with the 6600 GT i guess it fooled me becuae of the 128MB and the 256MB version. The GT version uses GDDR3 Memory which will outproform the standard 6600 model. If u gotz the money get the 6800 GT. . 🙂

edit: Are you stuck to having to use the AGP model?? PCI Express is the way to go now.

He's just wanting to upgrade his old computer so it can play some new games, so yes he is stuck using AGP. As for me, I have the X850XT PE, so.. 😀

Thirded. CPU will probably hinder performance, though, especially since it's a first-generation P4 (notorious for not offering significant gains over P3s and Athlons, if my history is correct).

Didn't notice the PCIe on the one at Monarch.

This one's $3 cheaper and non-XFX (some forum members have said XFX's 6600GTs are a bit problematic). The MSI one also seems to perform the best overclocked, for some reason (again, though, this is merely hearsay).
