Hey i just recevied a brand new xfx 5900 from newegg, i was hoping i would get it before t-giving and was glad i did, as soon as i took the bundle out of the box it shipped in there was something cluncking around in there, i looked and noticed one of the ramsinks had fell of i was very disapointed because i don't want to wait to rma and reship etc.. so i went out and spent $10 on some artic silver, im comfortable working on hardware ive built a handful of systems but im still relatively new to it. and therefore don't have any experience with thermal paste, if someone who knows about it could tell me how to do it id appreciate it. other than that the card looks good, i think it just came of in the shipping process. if it doesn't work or something after i do this then i will return it but am trying not to do that so i can use it over the holiday and weekend

Also one more thing i was reading in the Inter board and 5900 thread and my card doesn't match the cooling description indicated in thread, my card has a fhs on the core of the card and then two aluminum ram heatsinks on the card, one on top and one on the side of the gpu, my card has no cooling on the back, its a brand new card from newegg, which ive heard you can trust is it possible that they may have just changed the cooling or have different cooling setups on different cards

Please i just got home with the card and am anxious to get it going

Welcome to the forums.

I understand your anxious but don't freak over this. Did the ramsink have an adhesive on it to hold it onto the ram? If so, it's not very ease to get those things off once the epoxy hardens. Go over the card with a magnifying glass to check for signs of other damage. If it was me, I would just install the card and see if all works well. If it does, just clean the old epoxy off the ramsink and memory (very carefully) and reapply the thermal epoxy compound to the mem chips, BUT just a small amount. Account for it squishing out the sides when you press the ramsink down onto it. A small dot in the middle will do.

If the card gives you grief somehow, Do not put the ramsink back and RMA the card immediately.

Hope this helps.

About the ram sink not being on right your in need of Thermal adhesive compound and not just plain heat transfer compound i hope you got that stuff and not just heat sink past!! :)

As for the other stuff i have no idea but i would say if that?s the heat sink that came with the card then that?s what it came with and there?s nothing you can do about it.
If for some reason the cooling is crap and it breaks down you send it back how you got it and end of story .. if it works fine with no problems then happy gaming :)

ok so try it without the heatsink first? and if i do put it on what is the best way to clean off the exsisting substance from the chips and heatsink, their is barely any on the chips itself just a very little, oh and the stuff i bought is Artic 3 Thermal Compound is that the stuff i need?
