Many non-reference 5870's simple lack the needed hardware to have software voltage modification, and a BIOS flash won't fix that.

Luckily you didn't brick your card. Most likely yours is not a ref design pcb. Probably should just flash it back.

If you purchase a card with the intent to bios flash and overclock then it's best to buy the ref design.

My card doesn't have the same VRM's as the reference card, the voltage cannot be modded via software. As the replies above mentioned, this is probably the same thing with your card.

The only up side (well not really an upside, but probably not as much of a down side as you may think) is that the performance difference between 925MHz and say 1,000MHz really isn't going to be all that much.

Don't forget the heat factor also. My core will start to artifact at 1040 and was stable at 1035. I dropped down to 1025 to be safe. Having a full water block was the only thing that made it possible.

Not sure what your temps are like but mine sucked above 925 core. Had to have the stock fan around 60% or better do to the vreg temps. Very noisey!

Did you try using the Asus voltage adjustment program? My Asus cards do not respond to MSI, by design. You have to use the Asus program to do it. Its their Asus Voltage Tweak software pack. That could be your problem.

When I read this thread I got scared for you. Flashing your video card is risky as it is, but flashing it with another vendors BIOS is a disaster. I am soo happy and you are soo soo lucky you didnt kill your BIOS thus kill your card. Good job going back to XFX BIOS

Let me tell you these cards are already fast, OC doesn't make much difference, I mean you wont tell a difference so dont worry about it live with it. It would be the same you wouldnt see a difference and can have FRAPS running and you would see the same frame rate. Soo ya no worries and enjoy your card. thx

just a question ,
what would be a better route to go ,
keep my 5870 and crossfire it either with a 5850 or another 5870
or sell my 5870 and buy a 460 and sli` 2 of those?

i want to play ff14 and sc2 are the 2 main games i wana play max settings

Well, if I'm remembering this correctly (because I don't play either of those games), neither FF14 nor SC2 are really that graphically intensive. I would highly recommend staying with a single GPU over dual GPU's if it's not necessary, and in this case it doesn't seem like it would be.

Unfortunately, multi-GPU isn't the same as single GPU, despite how much AMD and NVIDIA would like you to believe. There's a whole slew of issues like drivers, microstuttering, scaling, etc. that come with it. If there's any possibility of getting the performance you want out of a single card, do it.
