Does anyone know what this version of the card is?

There isn't much information online.

Thanks

Yeah, there are literally no other XFX/Sapphire/Diamond 5850 cards available.

The only one I could find was this 5850 @ J&R. I am going to stop by the store in Manhattan tomorrow. I don't know if I want it if it is non-reference.

Any thoughts?

I'm interested in this new version as well. From comparing pictures on Newegg, it looks like XFX is consolidating the 5858/5870 cards onto one board design. The board is slightly longer than an OEM 5850 board and slightly shorter than an OEM 5870 board. It has power plugs on the end like a 5850 and unlike a 5870. The fan is in the middle of the shroud and vents are located all the way around the shroud, suggesting that air might be pushed in all directions, not just out the back vents.

Haven't seen any reviews of these models yet, other than user reviews on Newegg.

How do non-reference coolers usually perform? Are they better or worse on average?

It depends on why they dropped the reference cooler. Sometimes it's for a cheaper cooler that ends up being less effective, sometimes it's because the reference cooler isn't as effective as a simpler cooler (5770), or sometimes it's to install a better cooler (Sapphire Vapor-X).

Most of the non-reference designs have better cooling per dB of fan noise on the GPU itself. They often increase case temps slightly though. In the end it often depends on your case/system.
