XFX 5770 dual monitor problem

I have an XFX 5770 which has dual DVI outputs. I have connected 2 new 24" monitors to both DVI outputs. the first monitor is fine but I can't activate the second. In windows when I click the "detect" button it only finds one monitor. same in the catalyst control centre, only shows one monitor.

I know the other monitor is working because I swapped them over. apparently the XFX 5770 can support up to 3 monitors.

I have the latest catalyst drivers and I'm using windows 7 64bit

any ideas?

This is going to sound insane, but I had to jump through all kinds of hoops going from 2 monitors to 1 (2 old 17" to 1 24") on my machine (5770) and then moving my wife's machine from 1 monitor to 2 (4850).

BOTH machines I eventually gave up and ended up re-installing windows.
Yes, I tried uninstalling and re-installing drivers
Yes, I tried driver cleaner in safe mode before re-installing drivers
No, none of that worked on either machine and I faced the same problems on both machines (black screen computer would hang within 30 seconds of logging in to Windows).

I'm not looking forward to getting a new card and re-visiting all these driver issues.

I have a HD4830 which had one DVI monitor and one analog monitor attached. One day I upgraded the video drivers and only one monitor would display. It had the exact same symptoms as yours. I uninstalled and reinstalled, nothing worked. Since I hadn't rebuilt my PC in a few years I went ahead and did the whole wipe and reinstall Win7 from scratch thing. That fixed it.

I know that's not the answer your looking for. Sorry.

thanks for the reply guys

yes this is pretty maddening. I don't seem to be able to find a pattern to it, if I swap monitors around and reboot the other monitor will work then they both go blank.

its worrying as I need moth monitors to work on.

is this an inherent problem with the XFX 5770 card or should a reinstall of windows 7 fix this do you think?

These are similar symptoms to what I experienced. I'd log into Windows and within a minute, usually less both monitors would go blank and the system would hang. I was able to go back to one monitor by doing a system restore to a restore point prior to installing the 2nd monitor, but otherwise was hosed.

It's not an XFX 5770 problem, I had it on a different brand 5770 and a third brand of 4850. It's a driver problem that I couldn't fix by removing the driver and reinstalling it (even removing registry entries didn't seem to work, perhaps I missed one).

A re-install of Windows fixed it, and as painful as that is, it's the only thing I know to recommend.
