XFree86 4.02, Mandrake 7.2, ATI Radeon

Hello. I'm a linux newbie. But not a computer newbie. Anyway, I've managed to install Mandrake 7.2. I then went to ftp.freesoftware.com and downloaded the binaries for XFree86 4.02, for Linux, intel, and glibc2.1.

According to http://www.XFree86.org/ , version 4.02 features support for the ATI Radeon video chip. So I ran the xf86cfg(? the one that makes a XF86Config file) and it eventually asked me what graphics card I was using. There was a multipage list of cards in alphabetical order, but NONE of them was an ATI Radeon. What gives?

Very frustrating. Can someone help me out? I wouldn't be surprised if I left out necessary information, so please inquire for more details and I will try to reply quickly.

Radeon's been having problems all around. It took me days to realize that the drivers it shipped with were the culprit to my Windows 98 SE problems. I reformatted my hard drive 4 times trying to fix it. Then I found beta drivers on http://www.rage3d.com/ and the "common knowledge" that people with KT133 chipsets were better off with the betas.

My started working correctly with the beta drivers. The TV viewing software would lock up every time until I loaded the beta drivers. How can they ship drivers that don't work in Windows 98?

Drivers are there but not listed in the config program. Just set it up with any video card (Rage 128 is easy to modify), and then edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and look for the Section "Device" area where that video card is listed. Change the driver from what it is set at ("r128" if you said Rage 128 in xf86config to "radeon". Working fine on my Slackware distro and on Win2k. There's also a program called setrage that will create an ATI friendly XF86Config for their cards, but last I checked it didn't work for the Radeon and it also creates a completely new XF86Config file (can't modify an existing one). I've actually started work on a program myself to modify an existing XF86Config to support the Radeon. With any luck I should have it finished in a few days.

Man, these forums are awesome. I wish I had bothered with them sooner, as I've been an Anandtechie for a couple years.

Thank you so much for the help. I'm at work right now, but as soon as I get home, I'm going into hardcore configuration mode.

From now on, I'm coming here first with my questions.
