Xfire 4850 vs 4770

I am debating on which to get. I could get 2 4770s or 2 4850s for roughly the same price (+/- $10).

It would make since that the 4850 would be faster in xfire, but there have been so much hype over the 4770.

Anyone have anything that shows the difference?

If it helps... My max resolution would be 1680x1050. I am at 1280x1024 right now.. but the 1680x1050 would be if I upgrade my monitor.

This is probably all you need to decide:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articl...770-crossfirex_12.html

They are comparing the 4770s to a 4850x2 2GB card, which in theory should have an advantage, but apparently they are about equivalent, especially (and surprisingly) at higher resolutions. Given the lower power consumption of the 4770, I call it the winner.

But either solution is really far more than you need at 1280x1024. They start to make sense at 1680x1050. Perhaps consider upgrading your monitor and just getting one card for now, and getting the other one later if you don't like the performance?

Thanks! I might do that. Buy 1 4770 and then after I upgrade my monitor, I can opt for a second.. And the 4770 might be even cheaper then.

I would suggest that Crossfire makes little sense at those resolutions, fwiw.

I've just shifted from my 1600x1200 21" CRT to a 1920x1200 24"LCD, and I'm amazed how my 4850@800/1023 handles everything except Crysis (gee, I wonder what the 'except' title would be? ;) ).

EDIT: how much is a 4890 these days? No scaling worries, and dear lord they seem to oc like banshees...

Yes, I think so. And that goes along with what dug777 said too.

Thanks again. You can get the 4890 for around $200 on average with rebates, etc. - sometimes cheaper.

Thought about buying the 4770 today.. but I think I might wait 2 more weeks till next payday and get it with the CPU/Mobo. I have bought everything else already except CPU/Mobo/GPU. I also need to get a harddrive but I have one to use for a little bit.. only 80GB.

$287+$100+70(hd) for all of that.. coming to $457. Can't wait! Tired of this Athlon 2800 with Radeon 9700 Pro and 1.25GB of PC2700 ram.
