Which desktop does XFCE use, exactly? I feel like they are always changing distros so much I can can never keep up.
Xfce /is/ a desktop. That can be used on any GNU/Linux base. Debian, fedora, Mint, Ubuntu... are distributions, and Xfce, Gnome, KDE, Cinnamon... are DEs(desktop environments). There's also a category of WM(window manager), examples would be OpenBox, FluxBox, Awesome... The line between DE and WM are fuzzy, and it's really just an arbitrary distinction. A DE gives applications, and makes a whole package, while a WM just manages the windows. You get stuff like E17 though which is mostly a WM, but they do have a few apps, so it can go in DE also.
Not many distros use Xfce by default. The most notable is probably Xubuntu, but it can be installed on just about anything, and I use it on Debian.
