Xeons Where to buy them

Does anyone know a good place to get xeons and xeon mobos for a good price(i know they are alot i mean a good price not ripping me off) Also what is the advantage to a xeon vs p4. I mainly want one for dual processor support don't plan on upgrading now but soon.

Xeons have more L2 cache. I don't know the exact amount though. Doesn't the regular P4 support dual processor? You should go check out the chip info at Geek.com's "Chip Geek" section.

Do you actually need dual? I mean, if you just want it for its own sake, that's great, but don't expect it to go twice as fast 🙂 Not many applications can take advantage of a dualie, if you didn't realize it already. The most typical situation where it would be a big boost is if you have a program sucking 100% of one CPU in the background for an extended period of time, and still want to use the system for other intensive tasks.

Yea you maybe right i know that programs don't take advantage of it but my os will. I know it won't be twice as fast. I dunno what to do now though lol. I currently got a Pentium 4 1.6GHz. How long do you think that will last?

What's the most CPU-intensive task you have? For me, it would be a 3D modelling program. I've tied up a dual-P3 system for days at a time with it, on both CPUs.

By the way, is your 1.6 the variant with 256kb of L2 cache (Williamette core) or the 1.6A with 512k of L2 cache (Northwood core)? The Northwood is pretty easy to overclock to over 2GHz.

I have the 256 Willmite unfortunity i should have waited lol. I got an Intel motherboard so overclocking won't work. The most intesive would be Photoshop 7.0 with images that are 100MB+ and are a very high resolution. I dunno I just like finding ways to tweak, mess, and stuff u know.
