Xeon X5660 vs i2600K

I am currently planning out my next computer upgrade and was given a Xeon X5660 (2.8ghz 6 core) and am wondering if it is worth going with the Xeon and an X58 motherboard or just going with the faster 2600k and a P67 board.

This will be primarily a gaming computer so 6 cores is not really necessary but I have the processor already and am really trying to figure out if the 2600k is worth $300 in performance.

Thanks for the advice.

If you can, selling the X5660 could net you enough to pay for a 2600K + mobo.

That might make the person who gave you X5660 angry though, that CPU is worth quite a bit!

Yeah selling is not as option I can either use it or not. Leaning towards using it since it will save me about $300 that can go towards a better GPU but would love a few opinions.

Since you're getting it for free, go for it. Get a good cooler and OC it to hell and back

Use the xeon!!! 😱 It's an awesome processor. In highly threaded workloads it'll beat the 2600K and in gaming you'll never see a difference.

X5660 is one hell of a monster.

This is gonna compete with SB-E most likely - roughly on 99% of the things thrown at it.

proper qpi links unlike 2600k, massive cache and bandwith.

OC'ing wise it may not be as good, but still this a future proof monster.

I wish someone threw westmere's down my lap :/
