My company is getting into the world of laser scanning and 3D modeling. I need to recommend a high-end general purpose workstation to run this scanner and generate 3D models. Should I go with a 2.4GHz Xeon or a 2.53GHz P4? Everything else being equal would the Xeon give me better performance with graphics?

What 3D-modelling software will you use? Is it licensed on a per-processor basis? Xeon has Hyperthreading to offer, but if you pay double the licensing fees as a result... You might ask the software vendors what they recommend, or see if you can find a forum for users of the software, to get some specific feedback. They'd be the experts.

If you use 3D studio max ect .... getting a duel xeon will result in half the time to render it then the same clocked P4 .... so going for a xeon is a better choice. If you want a 2.4Ghz Xeon go right ahead but the price is alot at this point. If you have th money go for it, of do this setup for around $1200:

-(2x) Intel Xeon Prestonia 2.2Ghz 512k $612.00
-Supermicro P4DCE+ Intel i860 $419.00
-(2x) Samsung 256MB PC-800 $180.00 / ECC $208.00

$1211.00 / $1239.00 ECC

Not bad and Xeons kick ass \m/
