Hello

Well i have a problem i hope someone can help me with. I have been running my old Core I7 920 at 3.6Ghz for over a year now and i started to looking around for a replacement CPU for my system. Well a 6 core was the only choice but i don't have the money to buy a 970 or 980x.

Now i found this and it should work fine with x58 boards except some motherboards. Mine booted fine at stock 2.1Ghz. But as fast as im trying to raise the BCLK it wont boot! I have tried changing the V core to 1.250v but still nothing, Ram voltage still nothing. I was hopingi would be able to overclock this beauty to at least 3.2Ghz but no :(, Wont go one Ghz above stock.

Now i turning to suspect the memory modules i have. The post screen shows 1333 mhz at stock speed but i have Corsair 1600mhz memory modules. It hangs at the code C1 when trying to raise anything that has to overclocking to do. Help plz :(

How come i can clock my old 920 but not this one. Now i cant remember the settings for that CPU as i had to reset Cmos which was a big failure as i didn't save the settings :(

Feels like it must be a RAM related issue?

System spec

6core Intel XEON-L5639 socket 1366
Gigabyte Ga EX58-UD5
6X 2GB corsair tr3x6g1600c9
Gigabyte GTX 580
Intel 160GB SSD gen2

*EDIT*
Just wanted to share my experience a bit :). Link below where I found the problem!

It's most likely QPI voltage needs to be up'd. I run 1.35 on both QPI & Core volts, and clock 207 bclk conservatively. PLL may have to be raised a bit also.

Edit: Found this and Gigabyte shows 1.5 volt QPI for 200 bclk..

http://images.tweaktown.com/imagebank/Core%20i7%20920%20oc%204G%202008.12.12_(ENG).pdf

Thanks! But the actual post code shows something is wrong with the memory (C1) postcode memory. (It flickers between C1 and another postcode.Cant see as it goes to fast. This happens when i try to rise anything that has to overclocking of the memory or CPU. It wont accept 1mhz increase. Then its a bios reset!

One think that i also see is a huge difference between my old 920 and this is when i start the computer. It take ages for the computer to post the startup screen. Its like its waiting for something and then after 10 seconds it beeps and start to post the loading screen. This took 1 second before with my 920 and now with this Xeon 10sec

*EDIT*
Here are my settings. This is stock.Just reset the bios so nothing changed. What should i try? Please im going mad. Been using Software to overclock my old 920 which worked great. Now windows freezes when i try to raise the BCLK and voltage.

Hm .Think im going to put my old 920 back in! It is much faster when i overclock it then this is stock! Time to sell this to someone who has time to figure out how to get this working

Thanks

You have the uncore on auto. A wrong uncore ratio will single handily make a system not boot.

Up the multi by at least 1, set the the memory to x6 or x8, and uncore ratio to 12.

Thanks! Will try that now!. I really want this to beat my old 920 :) but i suck at this!

Thanks again!

Uncore clock ratio x12
SPD X6

Up the multi by at least 1 <-- Dont know what that is

Anyway with the red set = No boot (postcode C1 in endless loop)

Disable turbo (enables x16) and turbo mode (enables x20).

Set the SPD to 8, and keep the uncore ratio to x12.

Try bigger increments such as 2/6/8/10 and 1/3/5 etc. Bloomfield likes odd multi and Gulftown likes evens from what I tested.

Test one or two settings, if it boots, save it, then try more some more options. Turn things on or off, then try voltages, then finally try upping the multi. If all of that doesn't work then your board probably isn't compatible. It's odd because they always either work or it doesn't. Maybe you got a bad chip since I'm sure when they buy them in bulk they just mountain it up in a bin, so a stability test won't hurt.

What do you mean by Try bigger increments such as 2/6/8/10 and 1/3/5 etc. Which multi are you talking about? :$

Thanks for helping!

I mean even or odd base clock multipliers. The stock is 133, so 134, 136, 138, etc.

Shouldn't even matter in the end but you're trying to get it at least working. Just thought you might be having one of those base clock holes where multi within a range would refuse to boot. It happened during the early 920 days where 133 to 160 would work fine, but 170s and 180s would stop working completely.

Hello
I have tried to change the SPD from Auto to 6X, 8X, 10x and the machine doesnt boot with uncore x12. I have tried XMP profile1 and still doesnt boot.

It seams like i cant touch anything that has to custom settings to do :(

*EDIT* Well if i only try to set custom base clock multipliers from 133 to 134 it wont post, 135 wont post 136 wont post ..... and so on. What can be wrong?

WTH :( The guy i bought this CPU from said he has been running it in 3.2Ghz. Well im not sure anymore

Sure he sold you a bum chip? Settings aren't that different between the 920 and a Xeon..

Well he is telling the truth! He has been running this CPU without any settings beyond increasing the BCLK to 200. I am a bit jealous i must say!

Will try again with your suggestion! Thanks guys for helping me!

Okej well i cant change anything then voltage in the overclock section! SPD makes the machine not boot. All memory settings except Auto makes the machine not boot

BCLK 133+1 makes the machine not boot

QPI link speed 36X boots ok
System memory multiplier, start at 6 =No boot (non of the manual settings will boot)
Vcore should be 1.4 QPI/vtt Volts set to 1.51 = Boot

BCLK =no boot

Freezes on postcode C1=
C1 Detect memory, Auto-detection of DRAM size, type and ECC, Auto-detection of L2 cache

Note i do not have ECC memory

I don't use ECC mem either, however I don't have a Gigabyte board. It seems like a mem problem..

Yeah or the controller inside the CPU?

If i put my 920 back in its no problem. I can probably force it to 4Ghz without any problem. So my conclusion will be the CPU? Otherwise i shouldn't be able to run my 920 overclocked
with the exact same memory pair?

*Edit* Well i have found a new Mobo maybe. Not sure what to do. If i buy a new Mobo and its still wacky i will lose my mind

I don't think there is anything wrong with the cpu. A guy in the long thread at hardforum has the same type of problem and he also has a gigabyte motherboard.

Got mine in... no matter what I set it to, I can not get it to boot at all if it is above stock.

Very disappointed so far... anyone with a Gigabyte EX58 board get this working? If so, what settings did you use?

I've tried lowering / raising the QPI, CPU voltages, everything. Tried it at even 150 BCLK, and it still refused to boot. At this point, I may end up just going back to my i7 920.

Just one question. Do you have the latest bios installed?

Sorry if I wasn't clear. That post is not me. I did a cut and paste so you could see it. I'm not sure if he has the latest bios or not.

Also I don't mean to say it's impossible to overclock with that board, but it seems like it may be harder with gigabyte. Maybe there is just some multiplier that needs adjusted on a gigabyte that self adjusts on other boards for example. If it runs the cpu I would think it can overclock it. I'm just not sure how.

Ahh ok :)
Yes but what am i missing then? Thats the question. I find it annoying when i cant even raise the BCLK 1Mhz . I mean 1Mhz cant do much , Same with all frequency settings in the overclock section. Voltage is ok. I can change all voltage settings and it still boots but frequency no no.

might have to tweak you mem voltage, I had a lot of overclocking issues when I dropped a w3520 on my ud5
