Anyone seen the Xeon L3426 in the wild, or at least any benchmarks for it?

Its Xeon classification seems a bit unusual considering it actually seems to be the same thing as Core i7 Mobile, but faster at the same TDP, for less money ($284).

Am I missing anything here? Why aren't companies building laptops with this? Or are they already?

Let's compare the two versions:

Power Data Sheet:

Mobile Core i7

920XM

TDP HFM(High Frequency Mode): 55W
TDP LFM(Low Frequency Mode): 37W
C1E: 20W
C3: 14.5W
C6: 2.6W

820XM

TDP HFM(High Frequency Mode): 45W
TDP LFM(Low Frequency Mode): 35W
C1E: 18W
C3: 13W
C6: 2.6W

Xeon L3426

TDP 45W
*No LFM*
C1E: 21W
C3: 17W
C6: 4.0W

Turbo Mode and Clocks:

920XM

Base: 2.00GHz
3/4 core Max: 2.26GHz
2 cores Max: 3.06GHz
1 core: 3.20GHz

820XM

Base: 1.73GHz
3/4 core Max: 2.00GHz
2 cores Max: 2.80GHz
1 core: 3.06GHz

L3426

Base: 1.86GHz
3/4 core Max: 2.13GHz
2 cores Max: 3.06GHz
1 core: 3.20GHz

My conclusion is that the performance should be between the 820XM and 920XM. The power consumption in all cases will be a bit higher than even the 920XM since the 920XM has lower C-state power and also uses LFM, not to mention PM55 uses a bit less power than P55/3400 chipset.

But will they create entire laptop motherboard JUST for the L3426? I doubt it.

Thanks. I had not considered all of that. Great post.

So while the chip may not be that good for mobile platforms, once you consider price, the chip seems perfectly suited to the iMac. They generally use mobile chips to keep fan noise down, but it seems for a top of the line iMac model this L3426 would work well, as there is no battery to worry about. And I could see them designing a completely different motherboard for this one model, given they offer very few models in the first place.

That's assuming I'm not missing something else here.

Has anyone seen one of these chips in real life? Or are they very low volume products only being used for servers at this point?

im guessing another repeat of my sossoman series chips.

Basically laptop processors thrown on a server platform.
