Xeon E5 series 1.25x and 1.66x multiplier?

Hi,
I have an Asus P9X79 Deluxe board with a pair of E5-2670's here. Neither post when I select the 1.25 or 1.66 multiplier options. Sadly the multiplier doesn't go above 33x, so overclocking options are limited!

I've tried every option including lowering the multiplier right down to various options around 12x and 20x with no difference, trying different voltages and so on. Nothing works at all. My board came with a different version from what is posted on the Asus website, I've tried both versions with no luck.

I guess there is a chance that the Xeon's simply don't support the multipliers like the desktop chips. Can anyone confirm this for me, or have any insight into this?

I was under the impression that Xeons did not support the OCing options that the desktop chips supported.

Ummm. A "an Asus P9X79 Deluxe board with a pair of E5-2670's". A "pair"? Really???? Where did you plug in the second one since your motherboard is a single socket. Just wondering. I'm looking at the picture here: http://usa.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_2011/P9X79_DELUXE/ which sure looks like a single socket to me. Did you mean you have two motherboards with a CPU on each one?

Have you updated the BIOS? Asus released BIOS version 0802 a couple days ago.

Yeah of course I'm trying one at a time :)

AdamK47, I tried the 0709 bios which is on their site, where did you find the 0802? It isn't listed for me.

Intel17, through work. We are supplied them for testing and I thought it could be a bit of fun to pop them into a desktop motherboard :)

Edrick, where did you get that impression from?

Sorry, I did some reading and I then realized my error. The Xeon chipsets on the worstation/server MBs do not have the same OCnig ability as the desktop chipsets. It was not the CPU itself. Thats what I get for posting before my coffee in the morning. :)

AdamK47, Thanks for that. I have sent the Asus board back for now (had to within 7 days) and I'm waiting for the gigabyte ones to arrive. If the UD5 doesn't do it either, then I think I'll head out and buy a normal i7 3930k for the board. And then put the Xeon's back into the server they came with :)

Intel17, yep perfectly fine in every way, turbo and speedstep correctly and the windows task manager looks crazy with 16 threads :)

Hah, can't do that anymore or run benchmarks as I don't have a board anymore, but will have a gigabyte board in a few days hopefully.

It's surprising because that means someone could actually get a better setup than the extreme editions by picking up a Xeon E5.

Which again isn't suprising ;)
socket 1156 xeons were giving you i7 equvalent for slightly above i5 750 prices or 1366 xeons were giving better oc than regular i7 9x0 cpus.

If it weren't for multiplier lock 80w tdp xeons 1230 would be kicking ass this gen too ;)

I really can't wait to see how the E5 2687W does in the hands of some skilled overclockers! Although the OP's inability to set the ratios to 1.25 or 1.66 might mean Intel's locking out these Xeons :(

Since I have been asked to comment on this here is what I can say the Intel® Xeon® E5 processors have not been released yet. Since they haven’t been released I am unable to make any statements on them. At this point I really haven’t seen much on these processors at all expect for some roadmaps.

I will say that historically that Intel Xeons have not supported overclocking and without a unlocked multiplier you most likely wouldn’t be able to change the multiplier on them but since I don't deal with Engineering Samples (ES) processors I don't know what may or may not have enabled with them.

In the end the best advice I can give you about these ES processors if you are having a problem with is to contact your Intel Rep that gave you the processors and let them know about the issue and see if they have answers for you.

They are much more expensive though:

http://www.cpu-world.com/news_2011/2011102701_Prices_of_Xeon_E5-2600-series_CPUs.html

The best 6 core is a 2.9GHz part that costs $1552. On the 8 core chips, to beat the 6 core 3960X even in multi-threading would require a 2.7GHz part which costs $1723, and would actually be a downgrade due to lower clocks.

Thanks for that Christian. I will update you all when I get my hands on the gigabyte board and see if that works.

Ok, got the gigabyte board and I'm having the same problem. I've also heard from a friend at Intel that someone is having the same problem in the UK. I've dug through the datasheets here:

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processors/core/core-i7-lga-2011-datasheet-vol-1.html
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processors/core/core-i7-lga-2011-datasheet-vol-2.html

And have found I need to connect Land number BD48 to vcc or vtt.

Sadly though I can't find a picture of the lands to tell me where BD48 is.

On the Core2 datasheet for example, page 41 shows me what I want. http://download.intel.com/design/processor/datashts/318732.pdf

I've spent the last half hour googling and can't find anything!

*edit*, found it on this one, page 21: http://www.intel.com/content/dam/doc/guide/core-i7-lga-2011-guide.pdf

I sure hope that they get bclk multiplier overclocking working on E5's. Otherwise most of those people looking to get an SR-3 are going to be sorely disappointed.

Nearly there, figured out which pins I can connect. I'm going to head to a local automotive place and get a rear window defrost repair kit. Then see if it posts!

Update - the Asus board posted but ignored the forced 1.25x and the Gigabyte board refused to post.

evga, asus and gigabyte refuse to answer me.

In other news - anyone want a cool running 8-core Xeon with 20mb cache and ECC support for an X79 board? :)
