Xeon E3 or I7 question

Xeon E3 or i7??? I have asked this question before but that has been some time ago. I am needing a good CPU that will be used for video editing for up to 4-5 hours a day. I know a Xeon is made for 24/7 use and comes from a better dye so I was wondering what people's thoughts were. There will be no overclocking so don't go there. Thanks.

For non-overclockers, the E3 Xeons can represent a great value. They are the cheapest way to get into four core, eight thread performance (4C/8T).

The former is true of all Intel CPUs. I don't believe the latter is true - they both come from the same chips; they just enable or disable different features for different versions.

So pick based on the features of the chips. Do you need Intel Quick Sync to do quick-and-dirty encoding or some kind of preview encoding? Then don't get the E3-1230 or any other chip with its onboard GPU disabled. Do you need ECC RAM to make sure no random bit flips occur? Then get a Xeon.

The point of the thread JumBie linked to is that the E3-1230 is the cheapest (price) quad-core Intel chip with hyper-threading enabled. In other words, it's cheaper than all i7s.

All the E3 Xeons that end in "5" support Quick Sync, plus a few others.

Whichever is cheapest. If you're not using ECC or overclocking, it probably won't make much of a difference.

I prefer Xeons because they allow for multi-processor setups.
