Xeon E3-1230-V3 runs fine idle, temps too hot when running Prime95 on stock heatsink

I recently set up a system with a Xeon E3-1230-V3. I am using the stock heatsink but wiped off the default paste (using rubbing alcohol and coffee filter) and added Arctic MX-4. For temperature, at idle it runs in mid-30s, and during regular windows usage, tops out at low 50s (all temps in C of course).

The problem is, when I run Prime95, it quickly sends temps high (I had read that tcase for this processor is in the low 70s ... I turn the system off when it gets past 75C when running Prime95 as I don't want to do damage). My case ventilation isn't great, but I would think the temperature wouldn't just rocket so high so quickly (within 5-6 minutes on blend, within 1 minute on Small FFTs test, always torture testing 8 threads). Is this to be expected with the stock heatsink (given it is not overclocked ... I would think the stock heatsink could handle things)?
 
The CPU is rated for 100C. So for the CPU, 75C is relatively cold.

So nothing wrong. And you cant damage the CPU due to heat.
 
You cant measure Tcase. Tjmax is specified in the specification datasheet. And utilities gives you a Tj reading.

To measure Tcase you need an external sensor placed between the IHS and the heatsink.

Run Intel XTU and see exactly what the chip is doing.

But 75C is fine.

You can always buy the Intel TS15A cooler if you are worried. 😀
 
Nothing to worry about.. that chip doesn't start to throttle till 100C, and these CPU's are rated to do that for years.
