Are you saying Desktop P4's are unstable?

The validation procesdures for server chips are far more rigorous than for desktop chips.
But the 512KB version is only $345That nice, but they sure charge alot for that validation.

I wonder how much the new Extreme Edition P4 is gonna cost.
Given the price of AMD's forthcoming Athlon 64 FX, we'd expect the 3.2GHz Pentium 4 Extreme Edition to be priced accordingly. We are hearing that the processor will be priced around $740 in 1,000 unit quantities.

Who f-cking cares $700+ bucks for a couple extra frames maybe 10 sec in photoshop, 15 sec in TMPGEnc. If you got over 700 beans burning a hole in your pocket buy a new video card, raid card, hard drives, speakers, case or a new monitor. By the way how high does this $700+ waste overclock? If it's a cheap xeon mp (ie not dullie crippled) then I will be the first in line but intel would never do that to all their enterprise customers. So don't get your boxers in a bunch.

Hey smart a$$ the point is this cpu is W-A-S-T-E of money. Repeat after me W-A-S-T-E of money. Unless you are rich in which case the money is no object. I belive this thread was about the price of said cpu. So it's you who should get a " clue "

Man are you really this stupid? The thread wasn't about desktop CPUs, it's about the price of the Xeon. And it's not a waste of money to the people who NEED to use it. When you're in an enterprise situation, even downtime of 1% can be costly. Can you imagine what would happen to the airports if they had their system failing 1% of the time? Or even 0.1% of the time?

You don't have a clue about IT or budgets. Think you just go to comp usa and pop in a couple of cpu's into your servers and the boss just says duh ok here's the cash?

You think 700$ for a CPU is expensive? Think about a 100K a year engineer! Getting a 100K a year engineer to do his work even 1-2% faster would be worth 700$. That's the logic behind such chips.
For the performance fanatic, though.... Computers are their hobby and they're willing to throw obscene amounts of money at it, just like cars.
Moralpanic if you know a company with money to waste then my resume is in the mail.

LOL it has nothing to do with having money to waste, but if the company NEEDS or believes they need it. Obviously some do, because server level CPUs have been around since the beginning. LOLOL
