Hey.. I'm trying to configure a dual Xeon RAID 5 rackmount server, and i'm perplexed by the question of whether I should get 2.4GHz Xeons with 400MHz FSB or 2.0GHz Xeons with 533MHz FSB? The processors are the same price, what should I do? Does 533MHz FSB mathematically allow me to use PC2700 or PC3200 versus 400MHz FSB which only uses up to PC2100? Please help.. Any suggestions about dual xeon mobos, SCSI 5 RAID controllers, etc?

Thanks,

I have a question along the same line.

Would it make sense to get PC2700 or higher speed RAM for a server that so far only request PC2100 RAM ? Just in case I upgrade to a faster FSB machine so I can reuse the RAM ?

How backward compatiable are they ? Ie. PC2700->PC2100 ok ? or does PC3200->PC2100 ok too ?

I would go with the 533 MHz FSB. For memory questions, take a look at Supermicro's recommended memory for the E7500 mother boards. Supermicro, Tyan and Iwill make Xeon boards. My personal preference is Iwill's DP533. For a premium SCSI RAID card, ICP Vortex is THE choice. You may want to check out the forums at 2CPU. The folks on "Team Xeon" would love to help with your project.
