Is it me or are other people having problems connecting to dalnet with linux irc clients
takes hours
what might be the reason for my troubles connecting ??
 
should have absolutely nothing to do with your OS, and hardly anything to do with your client (as long as its not a total POS or something)

try running an ident server and making sure port 113 is open, that should speed up connecting. whats the hurry anyway? connect to your servers, go do something else for a few minutes, come back and they're all connected 🙂

especially when i ping off while in the middle of a conversation with someone

oh damn i didnt read your first post well enough, 2 or 3 hours? thats insane. well lets see, its only dalnet, and only under linux? i can usually connect to irc.dal.net somewhat quickly, under linux, what kind of connection are you on?
 
Even 2 minutes is terrible, I can connect to an irc server in seconds and that's how it should be for all of them.

I have noticed problems specific to dalnet but I just assumed it was overloaded (as it always is), usually I connect quickly but can't get a response from services for 5 or more minutes. I just don't use dalnet much, it's not worth the hassle.

Its ok though. DALNET sucks.
 
All I can possibly think of is that your ident server is not too good, when trying to connect. However, you mention that you ping out when having conversations. I'm thinking some way packets are just not getting to you, maybe some kind of driver issue? Not to familiar with the ins and outs of Linux, though I've tinkered with it a bit.
 
could be your firewall screwing things up. (if you have one at all). Lots of irc servers do some checking to try and keep out undesirable people and a firewall might might interfer with that so they won't log let you log on for awile.
